Using MT is becoming an increasingly common experience: today there are over three billion pages translated by machine from one language to another on the Internet every month. This is likely to increase as the number of people with English as their first language as a proportion on internet users continues to drop. But if you have used one of these services, you’ll know that the results are often far from perfect. These services generally convey the meaning of the message, but are rarely fluent and you certainly wouldn’t want to use them to translate an important document from your language into another!
So if there’s so much of it being done, why is the translation quality poor?
The reality is that neither Google nor Babel Fish are good examples of what MT can really achieve. There is nothing wrong with the underlying translation technology, but these implementations are simply doing a sentence by sentence translation without any additional processing.
There are a number of ways in which the quality of an automatic machine translation can be dramatically improved today. These include:
• Use of Dictionaries
• Identification of words and phrases that should not be translated
• Improving the translatability of the source language text

Background
There are numerous technologies for developing web applications, all of which have their pros and cons, and each with their own supporters and detractors. New e-mail service at NUI, Galway
A new e-mail service for staff, based on the industry-leading Exchange platform from Microsoft, is currently at pilot stage. This service will be made available to all staff and research post-graduates from early in 2006, and in addition to providing staff with a reliable and secure e-mail service, it will offer a number of value-added features including calendar-sharing, nominated delegate access to email and calendars, meeting notices, a Global Address Book containing contact details for University staff, and access from certain mobile devices including BlackBerrys.
In conjunction with the core Exchange based service on campus, a web-based version of MS Outlook, Outlook Web Access (OWA), will allow staff to check and read their e-mail and calendar from any computer with internet access. From January 1 st 2006 all new staff joining the University will be provided with Exchange based e-mail. Subsequently, all current staff will be migrated onto the new service on a phased basis. As part of the migration service, we will facilitate the migration of your existing mail on Bodkin onto the new Exchange server. Oracle is proposing the creation of the Eclipse Persistence Platform (EclipseLink) project in Eclipse that will deliver a comprehensive persistence platform. Oracle will lead this open source project and will contribute the source and test cases of its successful Oracle TopLink product to provide a starting point for the project. 2. Why has Oracle become a Strategic Member of Eclipse? Before becoming a Strategic Member, Oracle was leading three projects (Dali JPA Tools, JavaServer Faces Tools, BPEL) and participating in the Data Tools Platform’s Enablement project.
The Eclipse Persistence Platform project involves the dedication of a significant number of additional Oracle developers as well as a sizeable code contribution. As you can see, the PHP script is passed a parameter which is the URL of a login page of a Rails application. The only thing the PHP script does is to redirect to that URL passing a parameter that is a base64 encoded string: https://www.abcd.ox.ac.uk:8113/apps/contacts/login?id=base64string The id parameter is the base64 encoded version of an encryption of the username and the current date and time.
The login method of the Rails application looks at the id parameter, decodes it and then unencrypts it. So it now has the username and the date and time. In order to avoid replay attacks, the Rails application checks that the date and time refers to a recent date and time. It also checks that the username is in a list of valid usernames. If both these tests are passed, it sets a session variable (session[:user_id]) to "OK"; otherwise, it is set to "BAD". Having authenticated, subsequent methods of the Rails application are executed in the usual way, i.e., by using the URL of the method, e.g.: https://www.abcd.ox.ac.uk:8113/apps/contacts/add
We need to alter the code of the controller of the Rails application so that it has a call of before_filter.
