  • Wireless systems have evolved to successfully penetrate the world of personal communications, where virtually all people can talk as needed on-demand with a feature rich and flexible set of alternatives. This world of people talking is now being complemented with a wireless world of all things “talking” – in other words, all things are becoming wireless. As these new systems continue to evolve to meet their best-fit applications in the enterprise, matching each one’s unique characteristics to the application is not always clear to the prospective end user or even to a providing system integrator. Passive RFID system solutions are well known for their strengths and weaknesses in various tagging applications from access control to the supply chain. Active RFID/RTLS offers many more application opportunities for labor free automatic identification, counting, locating, sensing and protecting of assets; however, active RFID solutions today are being addressed using a handful of different system architectures. The mapping of best-fit characteristics for each is critical to achieving a workable system with the necessary reliability and at the lowest cost. What follows is a best-fit application analysis of the various active RFID system architecture alternatives for enterprise tagging solutions. The Foundation Enterprise RFID systems can generally be categorized as either “passive” or “active,” with passive tags using the received signal for power and active tags using an embedded battery for power.   • IFAXVIEW is a TIFF Viewer that allows you to view Internet FAX received on the PC as a Tagged Image File Format (”TIFF”) attachment to an email. The Internet FAX is a facsimile equipment connected to an Ethernet LAN (Local Area Network) that allows you to send documents over the Internet to a remote Internet FAX or a PC terminal. It also allows you to receive and print an email transmitted by a remote PC. The Internet FAX uses the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (”SMTP”) for communication, which is the same internet protocol used for Electronic Mail (”email”). The document is first scanned by the Internet FAX and converted into a TIFF-F formatted image file, and then transmitted to the remote location as an attachment file to an email using Multi-purpose Internet Mail Extensions (”MIME”) encoding. The email system at the receiving end must support MIME. Otherwise, the attachment file will be detached and lost. When you send an email message to someone, the Internet FAX uses SMTP to transfer your outgoing mail to your SMTP mail server, which in turn uses SMTP to send your mail to the Internet.   • MAPSTER has been designed to provide easy and intuitive access to fish and fish habitat information for a widely dispersed and diverse group of individuals. With the release of version 2.0, there have been many changes in the appearance and functionality of MAPSTER. To help new or returning users, this tutorial has been prepared to review the application's tools and features. The tutorial has been divided into four units : 1. Navigating the Map introduces MAPSTER's interface and toolbar while working with different map layers. Basic tools to explore and locate information on the map are also covered. 2. Creating Data and Maps covers the use of markup tools to create new datasets. Steps to distribute finished maps using the print and email functions are also presented. 3. Advanced Features showcases various methods to access attribute and spatial information from the maps. Users will also work through examples to add CHS charts and shapefiles into the map view. 4. GIS Maps and Data provides a description of the web pages found on the HEB GIS Unit website. The MAPSTER interface is divided into several frames, indicated in the picture below: • Tab Frame - contains a number of functions to interact with the map and the map layers.   • A major problem with Object Oriented Programming (OOP) is that it cannot deal efficiently with crosscutting concerns. Aspect Oriented Software Development (AOSD) is a new methodology that tries to enable the extension of the separation of concerns capabilities in software development. AOSD, which encompasses Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP), hopes to enable the developer or architect to capture crosscutting concerns in a modular fashion. The objectives of the dissertation include the design, implementation and evaluation of a tool that enables the modularisation of crosscutting concerns within C#, that we have called “AspectC#”. AspectC# must: Allow the developer to use AOP constructs within C#. Make no explicit language extensions to C#. Be extensible for future development. AspectC# hopes to enable the developer to modularise crosscutting concerns within C#. By modularising crosscutting concerns this will lead to an easier development and maintenance of applications. The evaluation included a small case study comparing an example using AspectC# and OOP with C#. We believe the case study and tool supports the case for the use and promotion of AOSD. Special emphasis was placed on picking a real world, easily understood example of the use of the tool and we believe this represents an excellent introduction to some of the most widely used AOP and AOSD techniques.   • Adobe Photoshop is the graphic arts industry standard software for raster image manipulation. Cartographers can also use Photoshop to create effective colored shaded relief for maps. One important advantage in using Photoshop to create shaded relief is that of familiarity. Most cartographers and graphic artists have Photoshop on their desktop and are skilled in using it for working with images. It is an extremely powerful image-editing tool and a skilled cartographer can make many enhancements to a shaded relief map image once it is rendered. Grayscale to Height preparation (optional) To create relief in Photoshop you need first to get a grayscale to height image into the program. I will not go into details for this tutorial, I will simply use a grayscale image created using MacDEM, a remarkably powerful yet simple application that is a vital part of many a cartographer’s toolbox (available at http://www.treeswallow.com/macdem/ ). There are numerous other ways to bring in digital elevation data including opening some data files directly into Photoshop in RAW format.   • The Measuroscope is used to measure the lateral distance between two features on a substrate. The system uses video edge detection to reduce operator error by removing judgment inconsistencies. Resolution depends on magnification of objective and type of detection selected. Minimum resolution is 100 nm for 100x objective and video edge detection. Video Edge detection – Detects edges from distinct variations in field intensity – Must have objective selection on the screen the same as the objective in use.   • Defeating Compiler-level Buffer Overflow Protection
  • BUFFER OVERFLOW ATTACK SARE THE most popular method intruders use to gain remote and privileged access to computer systems. Programs that fail to use appropriate bounds checking can allow an attacker to write data beyond the intended boundaries of a buffer and thus possibly corrupt control structures in the program. This enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the same privilege as the victim process. An attacker’s preference is usually to overwrite the saved instruction pointer that is pushed onto the stack before a function call or to overwrite a function pointer that will be used later in the program. It is also possible to use these attacks simply to overwrite other data. This kind of attack is harder to prevent but, fortunately, is less common than the previous type and is not discussed here. Buffer overflows first gained attention with the release of the famed Morris worm which exploited a buffer overflow in fingerd [1]. Despite the attack used in the Morris worm, buffer overflows did not become popular until the release of two papers that detailed the discovery and exploitation of these vulnerabilities [2,3]. This paper discusses vulnerabilities in two compiler-level protection mechanisms, StackGuard and Point-Guard. While this paper takes a critical look at both of these solutions, it does not intend to make them seem insignificant. The attacks described in this paper help to show how StackGuard and PointGuard should be complemented to construct a more complete protection system.
