An understanding of the architecture and good development practices make the difference between a fast application and one that runs significantly slower than its full potential. Of course, applications developed for the 8086/8088, 80286, Intel386™ (DX or SX), and Intel486™ processors will execute on the Pentium ®, Pentium Pro and Pentium II processors without any modification or recompilation. However, the following code optimization techniques and architectural information will help you tune your application to its greatest potential.
Tuning an application to execute fast across the Intel Architecture (IA) is relatively simple when the programmer has the appropriate tools. To begin the tuning process, you need the following:
• Knowledge of the Intel Architecture. See Chapter 2.
• Knowledge of critical stall situations that may impact the performance of your application. See Chapters 3, 4 and 5.
• Knowledge of how good your compiler is at optimization and an understanding of how to help the compiler produce good code.
• Knowledge of the performance bottlenecks within your application. Use the VTune performance monitoring tool described in this document.
• Ability to monitor the performance of the application. Use VTune.
VTune, Intel’s Visual Tuning Environment Release 2.0 is a useful tool to help you understand your application and where to begin tuning. The Pentium and Pentium Pro processors provide the ability to monitor your code with performance event counters. These performance event counters can be accessed using VTune. To protect your investment in tires, it is necessary to know what caused each tire’s demise. This publication will lead to cost savings through providing guidance and help in the following areas:
1. Eliminating causes of failures if possible.
2. Retreading and repairing tires and placing them back into service.
3. Presenting tires for warranty credit when applicable.
4, Improving tire maintenance and tire selection if necessary.
Tire grading should be done prior to the tire being placed in a “scarp pile”. After a tire has been dismounted from the rim and before it is rolled out the tire shop door, the tire should be inspected with the following questions in mind:
1. Is the tire serviceable?
2. Is it repairable ot retreadable?
3. Could it be used in a limited service operation?
4. Should the tire be presented to the original manufacturer or retreader for warranty?
5. If none of the above apply, is it strictly junk?
These questions must be answered before the tire is placed in the scrap pile since the tire may lose its usefullness to rust while waiting in the pile to be graded. Any usable tire should be stored in a dry covered area.

The pipelining technique partitions blocks of combinational logic into n stages of equal delays, with the stages separated by banks of pipeline registers.
Register balancing improves the performance of the pipeline design, by moving the registers through combinational logic, adding additional registers as needed, to reduce the clock period. In this chapter, you will learn about the following:
• Basic Concepts
• Considering Input and Output Delays
• Handling Designs Having Hierarchy
• Enabling Register Balancing
• Inserting Pipeline Registers in a Design
• Hints and Restrictions
• Resetting Flip-Flops
• Replacing Flip-Flops
This chapter includes example methods of inserting the pipeline registers in a design through HDL and a script to convert simple flip-flops to asynchronously reset flip-flops.

Use Index entries created from the Knowledge Warehouse are now stored in SAPterm and can be changed there as well. Index entries can only be created in info object maintenance in the Knowledge Warehouse. For more information, see Creating Index Entries in the Terminology Database [Ext.]. You can, however, change index entries in SAPterm by selecting an index entry from the results list [Page 13] and choosing Maintain entry.
The maintenance screen for index entries is different than the maintenance screen for term entries and supports selected activities only, such as definition of valid and invalid synonyms. Other maintenance functions, such as creating glossary entries, are not possible for an index entry. Structure The index entry format in the results list differs from that of terminology entries. “company code, create” highlighted in gray is an index entry consisting of a main entry (company code) and a subentry (create) and will appear in the KW index search tool as follows: company code create Index subentries is a new category of additional information which can be selected or deselected under Further entries in the user settings [Page 8] for display
