  • The winter of 2004 brought with it a new opportunity for me. I began learning and programming in PHP and MySQL as an independent study and also for my job with both the admissions department and financial aid department of Eastern Washington University. My first bit of programming got off to a great start and it was when I was put in charge of developing a secure website that I began researching the topic of website security. I knew very little about how people hacked into websites to do various illegal activities, so I decided that some of the basic entry points into a website and its server needed to be addressed. Secure website development is of the utmost importance as the number of websites that provide personalized accounts and utilize cross site information. “When you deploy your application on the Web, it becomes available to everyone” (Kabir 737). In this paper I plan to bring to light some dangerous practices that are being used to attack websites. I will present an example of a practice, present a practical and secure way to handle it and if I have encountered the example in my own code, I will discuss my experiences with it.   • How to Import Data into Microsoft Access
  • This tutorial demonstrates how to import an Excel file into an Access database. You can also follow these same steps to import other data tables into Access, such as dbf files or txt files, with some minor variation. This document uses some standard database terminology, referring to columns as fields and rows as records. Working with data in Microsoft Access databases can be preferable to working with spreadsheets for a number of reasons. One database file can hold several tables, which makes consolidating and organizing data easier. Databases are also great for calculating summaries and aggregating data more efficiently than a spreadsheet. Access is a relational database, which means that you can bring related data stored in different tables together to summarize and calculate data; a feat that a spreadsheet like Excel cannot perform. Databases are a necessity when working with large datasets, as spreadsheets have a limit of 65,000 records. Finally, Microsoft Access databases are compatible with ArcGIS, as tables within Access databases can be directly accessed by ArcGIS and added to ArcMap. Tables can then be joined to boundary files based on a common field, and the data within the tables can be mapped. This is highly preferable to working with table in the dbf file format, which has very particular syntax rules that makes them difficult to work with. Access databases can also serve as geodatabases for holding boundary files and data tables (for instructions on importing shapefiles into Access, see the Import Shapefiles to Access tutorial). NOTE –
  • Implementing a Texture Caching System
  • Texture caching systems are designed to overcome the texture budget limitations of 3D games. Only the textures required to display the current scene are held in RAM. When new textures need to appear in the scene, they are loaded from a larger and slower repository, or they are dynamically generated. For example, textures can be pulled from disk into system RAM or downloaded from system RAM into the video RAM of a 3D accelerator. Textures can be dynamically generated by combining illumination maps with unlit source textures. QUAKE was one of the first games to implement a texture caching system that interacts closely with the 3D pipeline to cache graphics in an efficient manner (see References). DOOM cached textures as well, but its system was more of a solid- state approach, as was the data caching scheme in the 2D side-scroller ABUSE. The source code to both ABUSE and DOOM is now available; see the References at the end of this article. This article is broken into two parts. First, we’ll discuss the nature of texture maps and the issues involved in implementing a texture cache. Then, we’ll look at some concrete implementations of caching systems used in games that are currently under development. Textures and MIP-mapping Texture storage is all about MIP-maps. MIP-maps are prefiltered versions of a texture map stored at varying resolutions.   • Web 2.0 is the term used for web based applications that allow more interaction and collaboration between users. Examples of Web 2.0 technology are blogs, wikis, podcasts, RSS feeders and interactive websites, such as YouTube and SecondLife. These resources can be searched for information that you can use for papers and projects. How to search blogs There are a few websites that facilitate blog searching. Two of them are Technorati (http://technorati.com/) and Google Blog Search (http://blogsearch.google.com/). These sites work just like a traditional search engine, except that they exclusively search blogs. How to search wikis Wikis are websites that allow users to collaboratively edit and add content on a certain subject or topic. Some wikis are searchable using search engines, such as Google or Yahoo.   • The SIP Servlet API is a part of JAIN APIs and being standardized as JSR116 of JCP (Java Community Process). The SIP Servlet API version 1.0 was published in February, 2003. Note: In this document, the term “SIP Servlet” is used to represent the API, and “SIP servlet” is used to represent an application created with the API. J2EE provides Java Servlet that is a main technology of building Web applications. Although Java Servlet is used only to develop HTTP protocol-based applications on a Web application server, it basically has functions as a generic API for server applications. SIP Servlet is defined as the generic servlet API with SIP-specific functions added. SIP Servlets are very similar to HTTP Servlets, and HTTP servlet developers will quickly adapt to the programming model. The service level defined by both HTTP and SIP Servlets is very similar, and you can easily design applications that support both HTTP and SIP. Listing 1 shows an example of a simple SIP servlet.
