  • The Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) is a powerful and widely adopted means of exchanging Astronomical Data. There are also a great number of tools and libraries available on many platforms to facilitate working with FITS. We present the FitsLib 1, A library written to facilitate development of astronomical data analysis tools on the Microsoft.Net Platform. This has been developed as a wrapper over one of the very popular and time tested FITS libraries, CFITSIO. Fits.Net library merges the advantages of speed and ruggedness of CFITSIO with the language independence of the Microsoft.Net technology and a simple Document Object Model (DOM). We believe this library will be intuitive for .NET programmers. We present the design and usage patterns of the library in C-Sharp. We also discuss performance issues of the library. Finally we present a number of applications and web services, which are currently running on this library. We wished to use the CFITSIO package in developing image cutout services on the Microsoft’s .Net Platform in the C-Sharp language. This is a comprehensive library and we did not feel translation was viable, C-Sharp does allow use of managed C++. We set out to wrap a minimal set of routines in the managed C++ programming environment. This minimal set, however, grew larger as more functionality was required in C-Sharp. It became apparent that developing code with so many pointers and unmanaged data objects in C-Sharp would prove to be prohibitive, both for development and for maintenance.   • The major difference between the Debian distribution and other Linux distributions that are currently available is its open development model. This is not, however, the only difference between Debian and the other distributions. The second, equally important difference, is Debian’s strict adherence to the “Free Software” ideal. It is quite impressive, when you think about it, that this distribution is composed of freely redistributable software, complete with source code. Now, most other distributions also supply source code and these same programs, but they will also put packages into their distributions that can not be redistributed under certain conditions, without any concern for the legal problems that they deliver to their customer. Users of the Debian distribution can be assured that what they find in that distribution will have no constraints on the free distribution and modification of that software, leaving them free to build “value added” systems from this Distribution without fear that they will find themselves in court for misuse of someone else’s intellectual property. Debian provides areas within the archives for packages that do not meet these rigid standards, but are desired by the Debian community. Because of its free software status, the Debian packaging system can be used to package software that does not meet its own standards for free distribution. Packages that are not freely distributable are found in the non-free section of the distribution.   • An investigation into teaching introductory programming to physics undergraduates
  • The pedagogy of physics education has become the focus of increasing research. This project has applied such research to focus on the issue of introductory computer programming for physics students. It is concluded that teaching programming is both necessary and beneficial for physics students and may improve their performance on their degree. The choice of programming language for an introductory course is considered, and the Python programming language is selected. Questionnaire results from physics and engineering introductory courses are presented, and conclusions drawn from these results. The report finishes by presenting best practice suggestions to improve the enthusiasm and retention of material by the students. As early as 1979 it was pointed out by Lemos [1] that there was a lack of structure in the approach to teaching programming; with many different methods used and no empirical research to distinguish which was most helpful for the student. Lemos stated that most of the literature consists of subjective opinions on the most effective methods of instruction for a given programming language and called for dedicated research in this field. In the intervening years some work has been done in this field, however as will be seen in section 2.1 there is still a distinct lack of empirical research. Often, those systems apply proprietary techniques to achieve security and predictable timing behavior, even in case of faults. With the need of integrating multiple of those control systems into a bigger whole, requirements arise to open up proprietary systems for standard (non real-time) distributed computing technology. Component-oriented programming provides a promising way to system composition out of units with contractually specified interfaces and explicit context dependencies. Software component can be deployed independently, they are subject to composition by third parties. There exist a number of distributed component frameworks, notably the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) [14] , Microsoft’s Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM/COM+) [4] , SUN’s JavaBean Model [7] , and the relatively new .NET framework. Although all of these frameworks simplify the implementation of complex, distributed systems significantly, the support of techniques for reliable, fault-tolerant, and secure software, such as group communication protocols or replication is very limited. Any fault tolerance extension for components needs to trade off data abstraction and encapsulation against implementation specific knowledge about a component’s internal timing behavior, resource usage, interaction and access patterns. These non-functional aspects of a component are crucial for the predictable behavior of real-time and fault-tolerance mechanisms.
