The Color Guide and GlossaryColor communicates. Color sells. Color is the sizzle that drives the sale of virtually every consumer product in the world. It evokes a wide range of emotions that draw the buyer to the product. As design, graphics, and imaging professionals, we know that color is a crucial part of the selling process because it is such an important part of the buying decision. If we use color effectively in the manufacturing and marketing of an item, potential buyers will perceive added value in that product.
These GATF test images demonstrate colors that must be reproduced with careful precision. If the color of skin tones, sky blue, grass green, or food items are “off” by even a small margin, the appearance of the entire image will be adversely affected.
To use color effectively, it must be kept under tight control. The color workflow begins with the designer’s ideas and the customer’s specifications. From there, these colors must be communicated among several different individuals who will render and reproduce the colors on many different devices. At each stage of production, output from the previous step becomes the input for the next process. Every exchange brings the color into a new color space—from photographic film to monitor RGB to CMYK process proofing and printing on a variety of systems. And every evaluation is made by a different viewer under new viewing conditions.

Color Correction
Photoshop allows you to easily correct problems in color quality and tonal range created during the original photography or during the image’s scan. You can also correct problems in composition and sharpen the overall focus of the image. Retouching techniques vary greatly depending on how the image will be used. There is also much to be understood about image resolution. For more information about image resolution you should refer to the Photoshop manual or attend the Academic Computing Services workshop Graphics Formats and Scanning.
Color correction tools
All Adobe Photoshop color correction tools work basically the same way: by mapping existing ranges of pixel values to new ranges of pixel values. The difference between the tools is the amount of control you have.
For example, the Brightness/Contrast command (found in the Image>Adjust menu) makes the same adjustment to every pixel in the selection or image. Therefore, if you increase the brightness value by 30, 30 is added to the brightness value of every pixel. For more specific control of that, however, Photoshop provides the Levels menu that allows precise adjustment using the variables of highlights, shadows, and midtones. The Curves menu replaces high-end color correction systems and lets you isolate 16 ranges of pixel values between pure highlight and pure shadow.

The camera integration kit consists of a baseboard and a plug-in board, containing a VS6×24 device in a socket package. Figure 1 shows the base board with the socket plug-in attached. Software is provided which allows easy demonstration of the available features. An external interface allows access to the camera data and control signals, allowing the user to pass video data directly to their application. The user will be able to control the camera through the USB 2.0 interface, or through their own application.
Initially, the camera must be set up using the USB 2.0 interface, after which the camera can be used in conjunction with both the USB 2.0 interface and the user’s application, or with the user’s application as a stand alone module. Figure 1. IMG-x24-E01 image
