  • Mobile Ajax for Java ME Technology
  • There are many Sun Microsystems technologies that use Ajax [Ajax], and more than one way to use Ajax on mobile platforms. For example, applications written using the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE, formerly known as J2EE) may generate XML, JSON [JSON], XHTML and/or ECMAScript destined for mobile browsers. One of the recent advances on the Java Platform, Mobile Edition (Java ME, formerly known as J2ME) is the Mobile Service Architecture [MSA]. MSA is a Java Specification Request (JSR-248) which defines a set of APIs for Java ME which include a wide variety of features, from Bluetooth to payment, multimedia APIs and support for rich, animated graphics. This paper discusses an effort to provide Java ME developers with tools to create Mobile Ajax applications, combining the simplicity and familiarity of the Ajax programming model with the richness and secure environment of the MSA APIs. This effort takes the form of an open-source library that can be added to any Java ME application. The paper briefly describes this library along with some sample use cases. Mobile Ajax For The Java ME Platform Ajax is typically used in the context of Web applications running in a browser and using XmlHttpRequest from ECMAScript to retrieve XML or JSON data from RESTful Web Services. The results are applied as updates to the current browser's page DOM (Document Object Model [DOM]). In the scope of this paper, Mobile Ajax on the Java ME platform is used to mean the following: ? • Microsoft Application Center & iControl - Case Study
  • The goal for F5 and Microsoft® was to enable applications to send control messages to network devices, providing a layer between the network and the application as it added new intelligence. With this capability, the network can inform applications about availability, and the application instructs the network on where to direct traffic – without manual intervention and its associated costs. With this highly available, extremely secure solution in place, enterprises can expect increased ROI from their Web applications. Challenge Today’s applications consist of many bits and pieces that a limited workforce of skilled Web administrators may not have the time or resources to adequately manage and control. And efficiently managing application deployment and availability for large-scale web applications from multiple locales has been difficult at best. “Customers are moving from a client-server architecture to a predominantly web-based distributed architecture,” said Garth Fort, Group Project Manager, Microsoft. “Microsoft’s .NET vision is about evolving our tools and our platform to help customer build the next generation applications. F5 Networks has built-out a comprehensive suite of products to manage the delivery of those applications in a distributed environment. It’s an ideal fit.” The goal for both F5 and Microsoft was to enable applications to send control messages to network devices, providing a layer between the network and the application as it added new intelligence. With this capability, the network can inform applications about availability, for instance, and the application instructs the network on where to direct traffic – without manual intervention. F5 realized that using XML

  • What is Web 2.0? Ideas, technologies and implications for education
  • Within 15 years the Web has grown from a group work tool for scientists at CERN into a global information space with more than a billion users. Currently, it is both returning to its roots as a read/write tool and also entering a new, more social and participatory phase. These trends have led to a feeling that the Web is entering a ‘second phase’—a new, ‘improved’ Web version 2.0. But how justified is this perception? This TechWatch report was commissioned to investigate the substance behind the hyperbole surrounding ‘Web 2.0’ and to report on the implications this may have for the UK Higher and Further Education sector, with a special focus on collection and preservation activities within libraries. The report argues that by separating out the discussion of Web technologies (ongoing Web development overseen by the W3C), from the more recent applications and services (social software), and attempts to understand the manifestations and adoption of these services (the ‘big ideas’), decision makers will find it easier to understand and act on the strategic implications of ‘Web 2.0’. Indeed, analysing the composition and interplay of these strands provides a useful framework for understanding its significance. The report establishes that Web 2.0 is more than a set of ‘cool’ and new technologies and services, important though some of these are. It has, at its heart, a set of at least six powerful ideas that are changing the way some people interact. Secondly, it is also important to acknowledge that these ideas are not necessarily

  • Using Dosch Textures
  • Using Dosch Textures in 3D Studio MAX In order to properly use the textures in 3D Studio MAX please verify the location (drive-letter; e.g. D: or E:) where your image-maps are located. Then open the File/Configure-Paths page in 3DSM, switch to the “Bitmap”-section and enter the path to the IMAGE-folder on your CD-ROM at the “Configure-Paths” setting If the Raytracer fails to find a texture in any of the 3DSM-default folders, it now automatically searches through the extra locations defined in the “Configure- Paths” on the “Bitmap”-page. To add a path to the Path-List, press the 'ADD'-button and select the folder containing the image-maps for your textures, e.g. the IMAGE-folder on the product's CD-ROM. Using Dosch Textures in LightWave3D / Inspire3D Load the *.lws or *.lwo files directly in LightWave 3D or Inspire3D. In some cases the image maps for the different material-layers may not load automatically. If a path-requester appears, locate the IMAGES-folder on the CD-ROM and select the appropriate image. • MySQL Tutorial
  • Basic Database Terminology Many relational database concepts are really quite simple. In fact, much of the appeal of relational databases stems from the simplicity of their foundational concepts. Structural Terminology Within the database world, MySQL is classified as a relational database management system (RDBMS). That phrase breaks down as follows: • The database (the “DB” in RDBMS) is the repository for the information you want to store, structured in a simple, regular fashion: o The collection of data in a database is organized into tables. o Each table is organized into rows and columns. o Each row in a table is a record. o Records can contain several pieces of information; each column in a table corresponds to one of those pieces. • The management system (the “MS”) is the software that lets you use your data by allowing you to insert, retrieve, modify, or delete records. • The word “relational” (the “R”) indicates a particular kind of DBMS, one that is very good at relating (that is, matching up) information stored in one table to information stored in another by looking for elements common to each of them. The power of a relational DBMS lies in its capability to pull data from those tables conveniently and to join information from related tables to produce answers to questions that can’t be answered from individual tables alone.
