  • The Introduction of the OSCAR Database API (ODA)
  • ODA is an OSCAR Database API to make it easy for users to use the OSCAR database. When using ODA, there is no need to know how to connect the database or determine what its schema look like. ODA deployed on the OSCAR Subversion trunk uses Perl modules to connect, update, and query the database. Also, all the database subroutines for the end users are defined in a single Perl module, which is a collection of database subroutines and does the intermediate work between back-end database and OSCAR installation. As the previous paper showed, the old ODA has three problems. First, it can not fully support new features of OSCAR. Second, its implementation is overly complicated and takes a long time to learn and modify. Finally, its schema was also not well organized: 11 tables among 30 OSCAR tables are not used at all after OSCAR installation creates all the tables and numerous redundant shortcuts make developers confused in deciding what shortcuts should be used. OSCAR, therefore, needed more flexibility and a better organized database schema. The new version of ODA was developed not only to resolve the above chronic problems but also to establish a bridgehead for supporting OSCAR. It allows the OSCAR installer to add new features of the OSCAR sub-projects without modifying the whole OSCAR framework. The new version of ODA also makes it easy to participate in improving the database modules. The OSCAR sub-projects include HA-OSCAR [10] (High Availability, for mission-critical clusters), SSS-OSCAR [13] (Scalable System Software,
  • Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa:Ultimate Sport Manual
  • When Suzuki engineers began designing the GSX1300R they set out to produce a motorcycle so advanced that it didn’t fit in any established categories. A motorcycle with breathtaking acceleration, nimble handling, and world-class fit and finish. A machine so advanced it demanded a new performance category: Ultimate Sport. With Suzuki’s experience in building high-performance motorcycles, meeting the engine performance goals and building an excellent chassis wouldn’t be a problem. But to make this kind of performance seem effortless would be the ultimate challenge. One of the engineers recalled seeing the incredible flight of a small Falcon indigenous to Japan called Hayabusa. The Hayabusa is not the biggest or strongest bird in Japan, but it has the amazing ability to slice through the air reaching speeds of over 186 mph, making normal flight seem effortless. The engineer realized he had discovered the key element to the design. Make the bike able to slice through the air like a Hayabusa and normal performance would be almost effortless. It would be the most aerodynamic Suzuki ever built and it would be called the Hayabusa. Download Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa:Ultimate Sport Manual
  • Semantic Web meets Web 2.0: The Value of the Mundane for the Semantic Web
  • Web 2.0, not the Semantic Web, has become the face of “the next generation Web” among the tech-literate set, and even among many in the various research communities involved in the Web. Perceptions in these communities of what the Semantic Web is (and who is involved in it) are often misinformed if not misguided. In this paper we identify opportunities for Semantic Web activities to connect with the Web 2.0 community; we explore why this connection is of significant benefit to both groups, and identify how these connections open valuable research opportunities “in the real” for the Semantic Web effort. In a recent blog entry on the tech-savvy O’Reilly site, the author queries “Is Web 2.0 killing the Semantic Web?” By way of background, Web 2.0 is elsewhere on O’Reilly described as a service delivered through the Web in a Web way, delivering a “rich user experience” [ref]. Exemplars offered are BitTorrent, Google and Blogs. The blog writer who asks about Web 2.0 killing the Semantic Web sets his argument as Web 2.0’s instant superficial gratification of people vs the Semantic Web’s deep, meaningful and lasting relationship with data. Web 2.0, he says, is indifferent to technology and just wants to “’give power to the people’, quickly and efficiently” for superficial things like sharing files, opinions and photos. The author then goes on to state that the Semantic Web “is the polar opposite” being all about data and machine readability of that data and “sav[ing] lives.” It is because of Web 2.0’s

  • Nikon 35 mm Film Scanner LS-30 User's Guide
  • The LS-30 is a high-speed, high-resolution scanner capable of producing images suited to a wide variety of tasks, including desk- top publishing, design, and multi-media publishing. Its modular design allows you to change from scanning 35 mm slides to scanning 35 mm strip film “on the fly.” An adapter for scanning IX240 film is available separately. The LS-30 uses a high-speed SCSI interface for connection to computers running Mac OS System Software 7.1 or later, Windows 95 or later, or Windows NT 4.0 or later. Nikon Scan can be launched from any TWAIN-compliant application under Windows or from any application that supports Adobe Photoshop plug-ins (version 4.0 or higher) on the Macintosh. Nikon Scan can also be used as a “stand-alone” application, allowing you to save scanned images to disk without the help of another application. The user’s manuals for the LS-30 and Nikon Scan are divided into three parts. This User’s Guide offers a brief introduction to setting up the scanner and scanning images using Nikon Scan. More detailed reference manuals for the scanner and for Nikon Scan are provided on CD-ROM. To read these manuals you will need to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader software included on the refer- ence CD. In addition, a one-page Fast Track Guideis provided for experienced users who want to get started with the minimum of instruction. Where appropriate, this
  • Creating a 3D immersive environment in Maya
  • The following tutorial will take you step by step through the creation of a natural environment in Maya. You will also setup a character inside the environment and to add interactivity in Virtools. This tutorial introduces you to Maya’s 3D Paint Effects allowing you to paint in 3D. A few strokes can paint trees, grass, flowers. The paint strokes from your brush are converted into 3D objects inside a 3D space. Maya’s ability to convert 3D Paint Effects to polygonal objects is helpful to create content for interactive environments. This tutorial requires Maya 5.0 and up. You can control the strokes’ shape, color, density, while painting on the horizontal grid plane of the perspective view or directly on other 3D objects. Let’s grab a brush and start to paint trees and grass in 3D, let’s create the ground for your forest. 3.1 - Creating the ground Open a new scene in Maya. Go to the top menu, select, “File” > “New Scene”. Select the “Modeling” module in the box located on the left of the “Status Line”. Create a polygonal plane for the floor of your scene.
