  • A Guide to Getting your Data into Google Earth
  • Google Earth is a popular and widely used geographical browser. It is a standalone application that enables spatial data from a variety of sources to be displayed, explored and visually compared. Google Earth has the following important characteristics: • Free • Easy-to-use and intuitive user interface. Data are displayed on an interactive globe that can be rotated and zoomed to visually explore data in different regions of the world and at different spatial resolutions. • Rich built-in data. A vast array of high resolution datasets are included with Google Earth, including aerial imagery, place names, roads and descriptive articles. Data come from a mixture of commercial data providers and more informal user-generated sources. • Data can be loaded from local files, networks and web server. • Support and examples. Google Earth is well supported (informally) through the vast global user community (Google report that it has been downloaded 400 million times 5). • Relatively easy to import customised data. This document will help get you started. What role can Google Earth have in insurance? Google Earth does not offer any analytical functionality – it is a well-designed spatial data display and visual data exploration tool. Its power is the visual synthesis offered, in which customised, built-in, third-party spatial datasets from multiple sources can be visually inspected and visually compared. This might include the model outputs or the results of analytical work done by another tool. Data exploration and visual synthesis can help identify interesting patterns in data and between data that might assist in decision-making; for example, between
  • 2009 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI Information
  • The Jetta ushers in two important new features this year, a station wagon and a new, 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder TDI diesel engine. The sedan can also have its front wheels powered by a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder or a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder. The Jetta Wagon cannot be ordered with the 2.0-litre turbocharged gasoline engine. Interior and trunk The cabin is easy to access but the wide doorsills collect dirt and grime. The front seats are very comfortable, and drivers can easily find a good driving position thanks to the telescopic steering wheel and seat height adjustment. The slide adjustment lever should be on the door-side of the seat or, even better, run the width of the seat to make it easier to shift the seat before getting in. The rear seat is comfortable for two adults. Legroom is good but headroom is tight for tall people. The folding seatback has a 60/40 split, and the leather package adds a ski pass-through. When the seatback is folded it slopes up a bit towards the front, so it doesn’t form a flat floor with the trunk of the sedan, or the cargo floor of the wagon. As is customary with Volkswagen, the sedan’s trunk is very spacious. However, the opening is a bit small. The lid has outside hinges. There’s a small dual grocery-bag hook below the upper part of the trunk. The dimensions of the cargo area in the wagon are generous: 106 cm behind the rear seatbacks when they’re up, 178 cm when they’re folded, 100 cm

  • Mapping the Net: Revenge of the Physical World
  • Once upon a time, the Internet was a wholly virtual environment, moored only loosely to the physical world. It was where information went to become free, where censorship was routed around, where communities could leap barriers of distance and culture in a single bound . . . and where no one knew you were a dog. The kicker was that these aspects were built into the fabric of the Net, thanks to its origins in military communications research. You couldn’t tie the Net to the real world if you wanted to. The physical world is making a comeback, even online. With the collapse of the dot-com stock bubble, things like brick-and-mortar storefronts, tangible assets, face-to-face meetings and hard-dollar profits suddenly are fashionable again. Following the same pattern, the foundational assumption that Internet users and sites have no connection to geography is eroding. It’s now possible to determine with high levels of certainty where someone is connecting from. This allows for targeting of services and content, but also raises the possibility that physical-world laws will encroach on cyberspace. Like it or not, the era when one could confidently speak of the Net as a world apart is coming to a close. Profitability and traditional stock valuation metrics do matter in the end. Napster and MP3.com have been forced to restructure their offerings in response to pressure from the music industry. (Just before we went to press MP3.com was bought by a major record company, Vivendi Universal.) Most, though not all, of the largest
  • Webstrategy Formulation: Benefiting from Web 2.0 Concepts to Deliver Business Values
  • The growth of internet usage has been increasing tremendously in the past years. Illustratively, Internet World Stats reports that there are approximately 1.25 billion internet users in the world. This is one of the triggers of the emergence of internet businesses nowadays. Most of the successful internet companies tend to develop and nurture a web community. The increasing importance of business communities confirms that there is a shift in business models from a traditional hierarchical system and competition into more collaboration and social networking, which are considered to be two of the most important web 2.0 concepts. Web 2.0 is defined as “the philosophy of mutually maximizing collective intelligence and added values for each participant by formalized and dynamic information sharing and creation”. An interesting and currently much highlighted prospect for web 2.0 is to aid organizations to enhance their businesses by sustaining their competitive advantage. Web 2.0 has been successfully adopted by many of the successful internet companies, such as YouTube, Amazon, Wikipedia, and Facebook. They are able to maintain and raise their big web communities by applying web 2.0 concepts in their webstrategy. Therefore, the following research question arises: “how can more traditional organizations benefit from web 2.0 concepts?”. This article investigates this research question regarding the formulation of webstrategy benefiting from web 2.0 on any type of organization. • Statistical Seismology Library Users Guide
  • The Statistical Seismology Library (SSLib) is a collection of earthquake hypocentral catalogues and R functions to analyse the catalogues. The analyses include graphical data displays, fitting of point process models, estimation of fractal dimensions, and rou- tines to apply the M8 Algorithm to given datasets. The Statistical Seismology Library is written in the R language, and consist of a number of R packages. Each package has its own Users Manual that contains documentation for all functions within that package. This Users Guide contains a sequence of examples, showing how the functions can be implemented and how they are related to each other. The guide is divided into three parts. The first part gives an introduction to the R language, emphasising those features that are important for an understanding of SSLib. In the second part, examples are given for each package in SSLib, showing how the functions are related to each other. The third section is more technical, and really relates to system administration: installation of software, software modification, and inclusion of local earthquake catalogues. Contributions to SSLib have been made by: Ray Brownrigg, Edwin Choi, Robert Davies, Michael Eglinton, David Harte, Dongfeng Li, Alistair Merrifield, Andrew Toke-ley, David Vere-Jones, Wenzheng Yang, Leon Young, Irina Zhdanova and Jiancang Zhuang. Ray Brownrigg translated the original S-PLUS code (Harte, 1998), where necessary, into R and packaged the various library parts into R packages. Like S-PLUS (Statistical Sciences Inc., 1992), R is a statistical programming language (R Development Core Team, 2003) based on the S language (see
