Welcome to the Python for XBMC Tutorial! This project began one day when I discovered XBMC (XBox Media Center) supports scripts written in Python. Darkie made the port, and I’d like to thank him for his great work and support! (I harassed him with questions and feature suggestions and he was always nice enough to reply to the questions and to add the features.) While we are enormously pleased with Python as a programming language for introductory classes, we did note a few issues which were awkward or confusing to Intro students. We want to make it clear in discussing these issues that we are only speaking from the point of view of novice programmers. Experienced programmers might well have very different views.

Crystal Reports has enjoyed a long association with Microsoft and has shipped with Visual Basic (and subsequently Visual Studio) as the default report writer since 1993. Developers have traditionally had a love-hate relationship with Crystal Reports; they loved the functionality it provided and the free run-time license, but they hated having to upgrade to the latest version to get the features they required. Another complaint was that reports could not be created or modified programmatically; they could be created only through the user interface (UI) with either the developer UI with Visual Studio or the consumer UI with the Crystal Reports retail package.

Delphi/400 is a suite of application modernization tools designed to enable System i application developers to build completely new Web applications or build new Web interfaces to existing applications. For the System/i developer, there is lots of good news. The approach is based on the same notion of holistic application design and user interface / logic separation that System i developers have been using since the box you and I love was once called the System/38 Delphi/400 is the toolset that best addresses the notion of the application factory of rapid application development. It is the natural next step in a progression of tools from those with sophisticated names such as “Intelligent Development Environment,” “Componentization,” and “Visualization.” Yes, It is all of those and more. It does its thing by asking the developer to think about the whole application, not just one Web page at a time. Isn’t that how System i developers already think?

Google Chrome is out, brand new and shiny, and with its launch a new set of standards for all web browsers is implemented for both end users and developers. At this moment the Internet is flooded with details and info on Google’s newest and hottest application designed to link the user to the pool of information on the web. Unlike successful browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Opera and even Internet Explorer, Google’s approach in building Chrome differs in that the app is built from scratch without giving in to formalities (that is why, at first use, most users will waste time looking for the menu bar). The program seems as if all the features were added as soon as the tester needed them. None of its features are unnecessary or redundant in terms of access.

By now, everyone has visited a website that utilizes Flash multimedia within its design. Since 1996, the use of Flash has grown in popularity thanks to its ability to add animation and interactivity to websites. More recently, Flash has become an essential component in the prolific distribution of intrusive “pop-ups,” or web-based advertisements. Flash also grants designers the ability to integrate video into web pages, and this has led many within the Web 2.0 space to use Flash to develop rich Internet applications. Many companies, including my own, Denver interactive agency Fusionbox, offer streaming Flash Video Solutions to clients in need of online video.
