  • This workshop is designed to expand on the concepts introduced in the Photoshop Introduction workshop by exploring more complex techniques along with some useful tips, tricks and features. Color Correction Photoshop allows you to easily correct problems in color quality and tonal range created during the original photography or during the image’s scan. You can also correct problems in composition and sharpen the overall focus of the image. Retouching techniques vary greatly depending on how the image will be used. There is also much to be understood about image resolution. For more information about image resolution you should refer to the Photoshop manual or attend the Academic Computing Services workshop Graphics Formats and Scanning. Color correction tools All Adobe Photoshop color correction tools work basically the same way: by mapping existing ranges of pixel values to new ranges of pixel values. The difference between the tools is the amount of control you have. For example, the Brightness/Contrast command (found in the Image>Adjust menu) makes the same adjustment to every pixel in the selection or image. Therefore, if you increase the brightness value by 30, 30 is added to the brightness value of every pixel. For more specific control of that, however, Photoshop provides the Levels menu that allows precise adjustment using the variables of highlights, shadows, and midtones. The Curves menu replaces high-end color correction systems and lets you isolate 16 ranges of pixel values between pure highlight and pure shadow. Download pdf Photoshop Intermediate
  • A Globus Primer What is the Grid and How Do I Use It?
  • What is the Grid? How are Grids built and used (today)? What Grid software is available and what does it do? BREAK (somewhere during part III) How have others succeeded? History For years, a few whacky computer scientists have been trying to help other scientists use distributed computing. Interactive simulation (climate modeling) Very large scale simulation and analysis (galaxy formation, gravity waves, battlefield simulation) Engineering (parameter studies, linked component models) Experimental data analysis (high-energy physics) Image and sensor analysis (astronomy, climate study, ecology) Online instrumentation (microscopes, x-ray devices, etc.) Remote visualization (climate studies, biology) Engineering (large-scale structural testing, chemical engineering) In these cases, the scientific problems are big enough that they require people in several organizations to collaborate and share computing resources, data, instruments. What Types of Problems? Your system administrators can’t agree on a uniform authentication system, but you have to allow your users to authenticate once (using a single password) then use services on all systems, with per-user accounting. ou need to be able to offload work during peak times to systems at other companies, but the volume of work they’ll accept changes from day-to-day. • Application of Time-Temperature-Stress Parameter to High Temperature Performance of Aluminum Alloys
  • Because the properties of aluminum alloys are dependent upon both the exposure temperature and also to the length of time of exposure, the prediction of design values for structures designed to last many years is a significant challenge. For relatively short-life structures, the need is addressed simply by planning ahead and carrying out a test plan that replicates the intended service conditions. This is feasible for structures whose design life might be as much as a year or even five years, but it is not very practical for structures for which the life expectancy is 10 years or more. Since the early 1950s, the analyses of long time, high temperature data for aluminum alloys, ferrous metals and superalloys (1-4), has been addressed through the use of time-temperature parametric equations that permit the consolidation of data obtained over a variety of temperatures and exposure times into a single relationship. Once such relationships are established based upon the available experimental data and optimized, it is possible to extrapolate to service conditions substantially beyond the range of the test data themselves. This must always be done cautiously and with awareness of the extent of the extrapolation, but it provides a better perspective than simply extrapolating individual strength life curves. Within the scope of this paper, the authors will briefly review the background for and the application of the most widely used time-temperature parameter, the Larson-Miller Parameter (LMP) plus, more importantly, demonstrate that there is value in the application of such parameters to types of data
  • A Short History of the Computer
  • The history of computers starts out about 2000 years ago, at the birth of the abacus, a wooden rack holding two horizontal wires with beads strung on them. When these beads are moved around, according to programming rules memorized by the user, all regular arithmetic problems can be done. Another important invention around the same time was the Astrolabe, used for navigation. Blaise Pascal is usually credited for building the first digital computer in 1642. It added numbers entered with dials and was made to help his father, a tax collector. In 1671, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz invented a computer that was built in 1694. It could add, and, after changing some things around, multiply. Leibniz invented a special stepped gear mechanism for introducing the addend digits, and this is still being used. The prototypes made by Pascal and Leibniz were not used in many places, and considered weird until a little more than a century later, when Thomas of Colmar (A.K.A. Charles Xavier Thomas) created the first successful mechanical calculator that could add, subtract, multiply, and divide. A lot of improved desktop calculators by many inventors followed, so that by about 1890, the range of improvements included: Accumulation of partial results Storage and automatic reentry of past results (A memory function) Printing of the results Babbage While Thomas of Colmar was developing the desktop calculator, a series of very interesting developments in computers was started in Cambridge, England, by Charles Babbage (left, of which the computer store "Babbages" is named), a mathematics professor. In 1812,
