  • From GUI to Text: A Windows User's Guide to Running Linux without a GUI
  • For example, runlevel 3 is configured in mainstream distributions such as Red Hat, Fedora Core and SuSE to provide full multi-user capabilities with networking and a text-based interface. Runlevel 5 is the same as runlevel 3, but with an additional step of loading a graphical user interface for the user. Many servers are configured to boot into runlevel 3 as part of their normal operation, since they don't need a GUI to do their job. The concept of the plumbing behind runlevels is easy to understand. Generally speaking, there is a collection of programs used to start up a machine (and another set of programs that are run during machine shutdown). Different runlevels invoke subsets of these programs. The definition of which programs are included in one runlevel's subset versus another's are contained in a series of directories named /etc/rcN.d, where N runs from 0 to 6, matching the various runlevels available. Thus, the program that starts the GUI, startx, is included in /etc/rc5.d, but not in /etc/rc3.d Getting Linux to load to a text interface So, you want to boot Linux into runlevel 3 because all you need is a text based interface. When Linux boots up, one of the things it does early on in the process is look in a file called /etc/inittab for a line that looks like this: id:5:initdefault: The number after the first colon defines which runlevel will be used during startup. In this example, the '5' in this line (this is an inittab file from a Fedora Core

  • Tekserve Macintosh Troubleshooting Pocket Guide Manual
  • Tekserve Macintosh Troubleshooting Pocket Guide Introduction We bought Macs because they work . While our Windows-bound friends are continually barraged by viruses, spyware, missing drivers, and bizarre incompatibilities,we are cruising along making movies, sharing photos, publishing websites, and playing MP3s.Some of us are even creating eye-popping high definition video effects, and in real time. In a certain context, this productivity is remarkable. As the Macintosh operating system has matured over the years,so has its complexity. Today, a Mac mini is pre-installed with 190,101 files, each one intended to perform some task. Every layer of this system must work reliably from the basic hardware functions of the kernel, through the networking and file operations of the Unix core,to Aqua s graphical interface,to the clicks and beeps of each particular program. But when trouble strikes, this complexity makes troubleshooting more difficult than before. There is much more that could have gone wrong. This book is a compilation of our experience with Macintosh hardware and Mac OS X. It is short enough that you can read through it easily, and maybe discover some useful new tricks. We ve also tried to organize it so that you can ip to a particular section in an emergency. • eXtc Web Developer Overview
  • eXtc Web Developer (EWD) is a very high productivity, enterprise-grade platform for developing web applications. It includes an advanced but extremely easy to use Ajax Framework, allowing sophisticated, modern web applications to be built almost as quickly and simply as static web pages. EWD has been designed to be technology-independent, and is potentially capable of working with any web application front-end environment (eg PHP, Java Server Pages, ASP.Net), any scripting language and any database. Background There are numerous technologies for developing web applications, all of which have their pros and cons, and each with their own supporters and detractors. There are mainstream, non-proprietary and/or Open Source technologies such as PHP and Java Server Pages (JSP), and there are proprietary technologies such as .Net. The choice of technology will usually be a result of issues such as performance, cost, available skills, corporate strategy or independent technical advice. Although the end product of these technologies is HTML and JavaScript, the mechanics and methodology needed to program and use these technologies are very different. It is very difficult to change your mind and change technologies once you have committed to one approach. Programming staff will tend to be skilled in the technology you’ve chosen, and changing technologies involves significant retraining and/or re-recruitment of staff. eXtc Web Developer (EWD) completely changes this situation and allows you to develop your web applications in a way that is independent of your web application run-time technology, and allows you to focus on what you are trying to do, rather than

  • This tutorial shows how to create behaviors for interactive textures: scrolling, blending textures on the faces of a cube. We will work on one face of the cube with its specific material-shader and one texture “mountain.jpg”. Part 4 of this tutorial covers setting up an orbital camera. Part 1- In Maya, exporting a cube with textures Before exporting to Virtools, make sure that all faces inside the cube have their normals facing towards the inside of the cube. Go to Modeling, Display > Polygon Components > Normals Normals are represented with colored lines stickin out of the faces of the cube. The red arrow shows the way one normal should look like.
