Web application technologies like PHP, CGI, Javascript, and Ajax have made it much easier for people to construct and deploy services on the Internet. Unfortunately, this has opened a wide avenue for new attacks since it is as easy to unintentionally introduce new vulnerabilities into web applications as it is to intentionally introduce new functionality. There are hundreds of open source projects ranging from simple email software to publicly dedicated WWW servers and full operating systems. This article describes an online platform for educators with free open source educational systems including wikis, blogs, bulletin boards, Content/Course Management Systems, and MOOs, all open systems which are easily installed and managed. By setting up a content-based server, educators can save and archive their files online easily, and integrate their online resources without needing web design skill. With full control of these different educational tools, educators can form a collaborative learning community based on their teaching goals. Thus teachers and students can build an online community as partners. They can learn from and with others, share and try out web learning tools, distribute leadership and inspiration, and support and interact with others from all over the world.

Solutions | J2EE to .NET 2.0 Migration
Since almost two years, there has been an active debate over the endurance of the two giant enterprise platforms, Microsoft‘s .NET and Sun‘s Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). Which technology would emerge as the leading platform for developing new web applications?

Now that the combat has settled down a bit, each platform has managed to capture a substantial share of market for itself. In fact, many organizations have arranged for a strategy for one or the other of these frameworks. But many (e.g. those which have large investments in the legacy systems) are still evaluating the merits of the two platforms. The IT personnel in those businesses is questioning as to what extent would choosing .NET or J2EE influence their host strategy, etc.

O*NET, the Occupational Information Network, is replacing the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) as a source of occupational information. O*NET is a database—not a book, like the DOT. This database has the qualities of both an interactive library and a language.

Serving as a library for information on the working world, O*NET allows everyone to access data on job characteristics and worker attributes. It includes information on the knowledge, skills, abilities, interests, preparation, contexts, and tasks associated with 1,122 O*NET occupations.

Because the properties of aluminum alloys are dependent upon both the exposure temperature and also to the length of time of exposure, the prediction of design values for structures designed to last many years is a significant challenge. For relatively short-life structures, the need is addressed simply by planning ahead and carrying out a test plan that replicates the intended service conditions. This is feasible for structures whose design life might be as much as a year or even five years, but it is not very practical for structures for which the life expectancy is 10 years or more.

Although traditional firewalls have effectively prevented network-level attacks, most future attacks will be at the application level, where current security mechanisms are woefully inadequate. Application-level security vulnerabilities are inherent in a Web application’s code, regardless of the technology in which the application is implemented or the security of the Web server and backend database on which it is built. A recent advisory published by Internet Security Systems (see the “Internet Resources” sidebar, p. 44) claims that 11 widely deployed shopping cart applications are vulnerable to a simple attack that lets hackers pur- chase goods for much less than their listed price. Worryingly, the attack does not require particular technical skill; it suffices to save the shopping cart’s HTML confirmation form to disk, use a text editor to modify the price of the goods (stored in a hidden form field), and load the HTML form back into the browser.

GNS3 is a Graphical Network Simulator that allows emulation of complex networks. You may be familiar with VMWare or Virtual PC that are used to emulate various operating systems in a virtual environment. These programs allow you to run operating systems such as Windows XP Professional or Ubuntu Linux in a virtual environment on your computer. GNS3 allows the same type of emulation using Cisco Internetwork Operating Systems. It allows you to run a Cisco IOS in a virtual environment on your computer. GNS3 is a graphical front end to a product called Dynagen. Dynamips is the core program that allows IOS emulation. Dynagen runs on top of Dynamips to create a more user friendly, text-based environment. A user may create network topologies using simple Windows ini-type files with Dynagen running on top of Dynamips. GNS3 takes this a step further by providing a graphical environment.
