  • .NET 2.0: Responsive IT Solution for Your Enterprise Applications
  • Solutions | J2EE to .NET 2.0 Migration Since almost two years, there has been an active debate over the endurance of the two giant enterprise platforms, Microsoft‘s .NET and Sun‘s Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). Which technology would emerge as the leading platform for developing new web applications? Now that the combat has settled down a bit, each platform has managed to capture a substantial share of market for itself. In fact, many organizations have arranged for a strategy for one or the other of these frameworks. But many (e.g. those which have large investments in the legacy systems) are still evaluating the merits of the two platforms. The IT personnel in those businesses is questioning as to what extent would choosing .NET or J2EE influence their host strategy, etc. It's getting harder, not easier, to pick a clear winner, because J2EE and .NET are so similar. With J2EE and .NET, selection may be based less upon intrinsic merits of the platforms and more on your existing environment (e.g. resources, investments) and personal preference or style. Instead of choosing your platform based on marketing hype or technical bias, you can look at more bottom-line factors: • What assets does your company already possess (software, hardware, middleware)? • What level of experience do you have in people who know both your business and your implemented technology? • Will upgrading that system asset result in a positive ROI for the business? Adopting this philosophy of architecture will provide the greatest stability and ROI over time, not whether
  • Creating a Poster in Microsoft PowerPoint
  • This handout will guide you through setting up a poster in PowerPoint, inserting text and images, and preparing the poster for printing. Creating your document A poster created in PowerPoint usually consists of a single slide. Launch Microsoft PowerPoint. PowerPoint will automatically open a blank presentation. To resize the slide, select Page Setup from the File menu. In the dialog box that pops up, select Custom under Slides sized for: Then enter the width and height of your poster, in inches. PowerPoint will automatically set portrait or landscape orientation based on the measurements you enter. The maximum size PowerPoint will allow for a slide is 56”. If you want your poster to be bigger than 56”, create it at half size and then print it at 200% scale. In this example, the desired poster size is 96” wide by 36” high, so it is designed at 48” by 18”. Inserting poster elements Insert text and graphics as you normally would in PowerPoint. Remember that if you are designing your poster at half the printed size, everything on your poster will also be half the printed size. So, if you want your title to be 1.5” high (108 pt), and you are designing your poster at half size, set the font to 54 pt. Inserting a PowerPoint slide You can insert a PowerPoint slide into your poster by saving it as an image. 1. In PowerPoint, select the slide you would like to place. 2. Select Save as from the File menu. Download pdf Creating a Poster in Microsoft PowerPoint
  • From DOS/Windows to Linux HOWTO Tutorial
  • Let’s start politically correct. Throughout this document I say “Linux”, but I mean “GNU/Linux”. Please go to http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux?and?gnu.html to see why. You want to switch from the DOS/Windows world to Linux? Good idea: Linux is technically superior to DOS, Windows 9x and even Windows NT. But beware: it might not be useful for you. These are the main differences between DOS/Windows and Linux: • Windows runs Microsoft Office and lots of games; is perceived to be easy to install and configure; is notoriously unstable; performs poorly; crashes are frequent. • Linux runs StarOffice, scores of technical software and fewer games; can be tricky to install and configure; is rock solid; performs impeccably; crashes are extremely rare. It’s up to you to decide what you need. Furthermore, Linux gives you power, but it takes some time to learn how to harness it. Thus, if mostly need commercial sw, or if you don’t feel like learning new commands and concepts, you had better look elsewhere. Be aware that many newcomers give up because of initial difficulties. • Friend or Foe? Web 2.0 in Technical Communication
  • The rise of Web 2.0 technology provides a platform for user-generated content.Publishing is no longer restricted to a few technical writers—any user can now contribute information. But the information coming from users tends to be highly specific, whereas technical documentation is comprehensive but less specific. The two types of information can coexist and improve the overall user experience. User-generated content also offers an opportunity for technical writers to participate as “curators”—by evaluating and organizing the information provided by end users. Technical writers are accustomed to being the gatekeepers for product information. They carefully organize product documentation, online help, and other user assistance for their readers. Compare this to the chaos of the Web, where content is splattered across blogs, forums, wikis, and the like with little or no organizational scheme. And yet, readers are turning to the chaos of the Web for information rather than reading the online help. They begin with a Google search and work through the results until they find something relevant. User-generated content and technical documentation can be complementary rather than competitive. In this white paper, we explore the implications of user-generated content and discuss how technical writers can integrate this content into their overall strategy. Download pdf Friend or Foe?
