  • Plotting Data with Microsoft Excel
  • Here is an example of an attempt to plot parametric data in a scientifically meaningful way, using Microsoft Excel. This example describes an experience using the Office X version for Macintosh. The details may change with different versions, but the principle stays the same – the author must control the appearance of all aspects of the figure. We cannot count on programmers to have correctly guessed our intended use of the application. If you find that it is just too awkward to prepare a proper figure using a computer program, then do it by hand. If you use a hand drawn graph do keep in mind its purpose. If it is to be a working document, not to be presented or published, then you may want to make it as large as you can, ignoring margins, for maximum accuracy. For a paper or presentation, just keep the figure well within the margins of your sheet of graph paper, since the purpose is to illustrate the result, not to use the graph as a working document. You don't need to fill up all available space. If you submit a manuscript for publication or conduct a formal presentation, then you will probably have to prepare a computer generated figure. PROGRAM DEFAULT Table 1 represents measurements of heights of tree seedlings as they were allowed to grow. If you haven't much experience plotting with Excel you might want to open a new spreadsheet, enter the data, and follow along with the example. The data were

  • Compatibility With Visual BASIC
  • The language structures in OpenOffice.org BASIC are very similar to those used in Visual BASIC. The methods used for accessing the underlying documents, however, are vastly different and have essentially no compatibility with each other. Entire books have been written dealing with the differences between Visual BASIC 6 (VB6), Visual BASIC.NET (VB.NET), and Visual BASIC for Applications (VBA). This chapter is only an overview of issues concerning compatibility between the OpenOffice.org BASIC and Visual BASIC. I use VBA, VB6 and VB.NET to refer to the specific versions and VB to generically refer to either or both versions. To convert VB macros that do not access the underlying documents, my first step is to bring them into OOo and fix the syntax errors. The second step is to remove the errors introduced due to differences in behavior. Thorough testing is required to avoid subtle problems. Significant code changes are required to convert the sections that access the underlying document structures. VBA is the variant used by Microsoft Office. VB.NET was released after VBA so it is possible that a later version of VBA will follow in the direction of VB.NET. Some of the keywords supported by OOo BASIC and deprecated when moving from VB6 and VBA to VB.NET... Download pdf Compatibility With Visual BASIC
  • Using libcurl in Visual Studio
  • “Curl is a tool for transferring files with URL syntax, supporting FTP, FTPS, HTTP, HTTPS, GOPHER, TELNET, DICT, FILE and LDAP. Curl supports HTTPS certificates, HTTP POST, HTTP PUT, FTP uploading, kerberos, HTTP form based upload, proxies, cookies, user+password authentication, file transfer resume, http proxy tunnelling and a busload of other useful tricks.” Here in this document we explain how to use CURL as a dll library in your Visual Studio C/C++ Project. There are many ways to use CURL but here we explain the simplest way with the minimum files needed from CURL. Once you build and run this simple application you can explorer other features of CURL and add more functionalities to your project. The document explains how to configure different parts which seems, by reading news groups, many people have similar problems with using dll files and configuration of Visual Studio and curl libs. So now that I have solution to those problems why not putting everything in a document so that other people don’t put same amount of time to figure out solutions to those problems. • Using Visual Studio .NET: IntelliSense and Debugging
  • Since you're going to be stuck using Visual Studio .NET anyway, at least for this edition of the .NET Compact Framework, you might as well get familiar with some of the features it provides. A lot of the things in Visual Studio .NET are targeted at database development, Web development, and other projects very different from .NET Compact Framework programming, but there are at least two features beyond the basic code entry and compilation which are well worth learning: IntelliSense, which helps you type correct code, and the debugging features, which can help you sort out what's going on when your program logic doesn't behave as expected. If you've used Visual Studio .NET before, this chapter may not be very exciting to you. Feel free to skip around. IntelliSense IntelliSense is a feature Microsoft provides to help you navigate through the ever-growing number of methods and parameters in their libraries and the code you write yourself. Thanks to IntelliSense, whenever you type an object or variable name it recognizes and type a period, you'll get a menu of choices that Visual Studio .NET thinks might be appropriate there. Type the first few letters, and IntelliSense will show you the possibilities corresponding to what you typed. Hit the space bar (or any other key that isn't allowed in a variable, property, or method name, and it will fill in the rest for you. You can also summon IntelliSense with keyboard combinations, or use the Edit > IntelliSense menu to request particular assistance. The IntelliSense menu

  • Breaking into computer networks from the Internet PDF
  • What is this document about anyway? While I was writing this document a book “Hack Proofing Your Network” was released. I haven’t been able to read it (dunno if its in print yet, and besides - everything takes a while to get to South Africa). I did however read the first chapter, as it is available to the public. In this chapter the author writes about different views on IT security - hackers, crackers, script kiddies and everything in between. I had some thoughts about this and decided that it was a good starting point for this document. I want to simplify the issue - let us forget motives at the moment, and simply look at the different characters in this play. To do this we will look at a real world analogy. Let us assume the ultimate goal is breaking into a safe (the safe is a database, a password file, confidential records or whatever). The safe is located inside of a physical building (the computer that hosts the data). The building is located inside of a town (the computer is connected to a network). There is a path/highway leading to the town and the path connects the town to other towns and/or cities. (read Internet/Intranet). The town/city is protected by a tollgate or an inspection point (the network is protected by a firewall, screening router etc.) There might be certain residents (the police) in the town looking for suspicious activity, and reporting it to the town’s mayor (the police
