  • Migrating Atlas to ASP.NET AJAX Final Content
  • Migrating Atlas applications to ASP.NET AJAX sounds like a rather hard and messy task; all applications have to be changed. However, in most cases, not much effort is required for the migration. There are several reasons for this. First, the most important features of Atlas changed only marginally in ASP.NET AJAX. And second, the most convenient features already exist, not in the ASP.NET AJAX package itself but in the Atlas Control Toolkit, which is now called ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit. This Short Cut mentions important changes for every chapter in Programming Atlas, if applicable. Not all of the functionality used in Programming Atlas survived the switch to ASP.NET AJAX; however, the most important elements of the framework are still there, and continue to work in a very similar fashion. Of course this Short Cut is not complete and does not cover every aspect that has been changed. It should help you, however, to judge whether it is feasible to port existing Atlas applications to ASP.NET AJAX or not. Download pdf Migrating Atlas to ASP.NET AJAX Final Content

  • Unreliable Guide To Hacking The Linux Kernel Tutorial Manual
  • Some Basic Rules No memory protection If you corrupt memory, whether in user context or interrupt context, the whole machine will crash. Are you sure you cant do what you want in userspace? No floating point or MMX The FPU context is not saved; even in user context the FPU state probably wont correspond with the current process: you would mess with some user process FPU state. If you really want to do this, you would have to explicitly save/restore the full FPU state (and avoid context switches). It is generally a bad idea; use fixed point arithmetic first. A rigid stack limit The kernel stack is about 6K in 2.2 (for most architectures: its about 14K on the Alpha), and shared with interrupts so you cant use it all. Avoid deep recursion and huge local arrays on the stack (allocate them dynamically instead). The Linux kernel is portable Lets keep it that way. Your code should be 64-bit clean, and endian-independent. You should also minimize CPU specific stuff, e.g. inline assembly should be cleanly encapsulated and minimized to ease porting. Generally it should be restricted to the architecture-dependent part of the kernel tree. Download Unreliable Guide To Hacking The Linux Kernel Tutorial Manual
  • Photoshop 6 tutorial: How to Create Basic Colored Shaded Relief
  • Adobe Photoshop is the graphic arts industry standard software for raster image manipulation. Cartographers can also use Photoshop to create effective colored shaded relief for maps. One important advantage in using Photoshop to create shaded relief is that of familiarity. Most cartographers and graphic artists have Photoshop on their desktop and are skilled in using it for working with images. It is an extremely powerful image-editing tool and a skilled cartographer can make many enhancements to a shaded relief map image once it is rendered. Grayscale to Height preparation (optional) To create relief in Photoshop you need first to get a grayscale to height image into the program. I will not go into details for this tutorial, I will simply use a grayscale image created using MacDEM, a remarkably powerful yet simple application that is a vital part of many a cartographer’s toolbox (available at http://www.treeswallow.com/macdem/ ). There are numerous other ways to bring in digital elevation data including opening some data files directly into Photoshop in RAW format. See Tom Patterson’s excellent tutorials on working with GTOPO 30 data for an example: http://www.nacis.org/cp/cp28/gtopo.html. • EventBased Programming Tutorial
  • This tutorial will introduce you to event?based programming (EBP) using a Windows desktop application written in C#. The application, called SystemBrowser, works a little like Windows Explorer: it displays folders and files, as shown in the next figure. What is EventBased Programming? Before diving into the design and implementation of SystemBrowser, let’s back up for a second to discuss what EBP is, why it is appealing and how it allows us to control coupling. In a nutshell, EBP is a way to design a software system using events and event notifications to connect the major parts together. The advantage of this approach, over traditional call?any?object?you?need designs, is lower coupling. In many cases you eliminate static coupling between parts, making it possible to test those parts in isolation, using a test fixture. I’ve barely begun and I’ve already introduced a couple of expressions that deserve explaining. What does parts mean in the previous sentence? I use this word to refer generically to classes, objects and assemblies. And what is static coupling. Unless you’re read other material of mine discussing coupling, you’re probably unfamiliar with the expression. Also, if there is something called static coupling, you might guess that there is something called dynamic coupling. You’d be right. Download pdf EventBased Programming Tutorial
