  • Interactive 3D models – From 3ds max to VRML
  • Producing 3D interactive models is becoming a greater challenge every day. Choosing the right tool to handle the modelling process is essential if the final product is to be a VRML world, which can satisfy the user’s desire for both interactivity and realism. 3ds max offers a potentially excellent development environment for creating high quality 3D models. This paper discusses how the tools and techniques available within 3ds max can be harnessed to produce complex interactive models, which are viewable with a VRML browser. Chapters 1.1 and 1.2 set out the scope and motivation for this paper. Chapter 1.3 describes the working platform, testing platform and the software packages used in our projects. Chapter 2 provides a brief overview of 3ds max modelling software and chapter 3 offers an overview of VRML language. Chapter 4 gives a short description of what interactivity in virtual worlds means and considers the user expectations of interactivity. What 3ds max offers for achieving interactivity in 3D models targeted for use in VRML and how we used this functionality in our projects, is brought together in chapter 4.1. When all objects are placed and scene is constructed (Chapter 4.1.), next significant step is to export the scene into VRML. Chapter 5 explains how this is done. Chapter 6 is a discussion of our experience derived from our work on the two projects. Chapter 7 is the conclusion and contains our final words on the topic.   • We have seen Web 2.0 technologies used to create new web GIS applications. In this paper Eamon Walsh, Chief Technology Officer for eSpatial examines technologies progressing the industry from the first Web 2.0 GIS applications. Key new capabilities include: • Annotating and updating spatial data rather than just viewing and searching, using “pure web” technologies rather than desktop GIS tools. • Data input from other consumer devices, such as cell phones. • Working with organizations’ own data (including large databases) rather than just points of interest on standard maps. Technologies considered include: • AJAX • Data input from cell-phones, including innovative mechanisms for determining location. Examples will be presented, including from a multi-disciplinary research project in this area - “ICING”, being carried out by a group including city governments, technology providers, and universities ( http://fp6-project-icing.eu ). We also look at how these capabilities are now moving from “mash-ups” to eGovernment and commercial systems, for both public access and internal use. Such systems range from “eCommunity” through to more traditional GIS areas such as Defense. In this we consider the requirements that prompted some organizations to move from sites based on “mash-ups” to systems built using commercial geospatial technology deployed in-house.   • The CellPipe 20A is a high-speed Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) device that supports bridging over ATM. It supports RFC1483 Multiprotocol over AAL5. You can use the CellPipe 20A to create a dedicated, physical connection to Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) equipment at the telephone company. You first attach your computer or Ethernet hub to the CellPipe 20A. Then, you connect the unit to a standard telephone line. The other end of the line connects to DSL equipment at the telephone company. Your DSL circuit is dedicated to your CellPipe unit. With DSL, you have the capacity to transfer data at very high rates. The actual rate can vary according to the type of CellPipe you use, the distance between the CellPipe and the DSL equipment, and the line quality of the connection. You can use DSL technology for Internet access, telecommuting, remote office connectivity, multimedia, and videoconferencing.   • The SIP Servlet API is a part of JAIN APIs and being standardized as JSR116 of JCP (Java Community Process). The SIP Servlet API version 1.0 was published in February, 2003. Note: In this document, the term “SIP Servlet” is used to represent the API, and “SIP servlet” is used to represent an application created with the API. J2EE provides Java Servlet that is a main technology of building Web applications. Although Java Servlet is used only to develop HTTP protocol-based applications on a Web application server, it basically has functions as a generic API for server applications. SIP Servlet is defined as the generic servlet API with SIP-specific functions added. SIP Servlets are very similar to HTTP Servlets, and HTTP servlet developers will quickly adapt to the programming model. The service level defined by both HTTP and SIP Servlets is very similar, and you can easily design applications that support both HTTP and SIP. Listing 1 shows an example of a simple SIP servlet.   • Google Earth, a tool that combines satellite imagery, maps, terrain, and 3D buildings, has partnered with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) to bring forth tangible proof of the devastation that is taking place in Darfur. It is a particularly good advocacy tool because it gives a clear visual representation of what is taking place in Darfur. Use this guide for tips on how to use Google Earth to move Darfur as a significant issue on your campus. USING GOOGLE EARTH TO FURTHER THE CAUSE Google Earth uses symbols to identify damaged and destroyed villages and the location of refugee camps and Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camps. Google Earth’s maps of the region, pictures of refugee camps, and videos of survivors can be used in presentations by students, faculty, and professionals to show the extent of the devastation that has occurred in Darfur. Use Google Earth in addition to PHR’s other advocacy materials to show your classmates, faculty members, and fellow activists the atrocities that have occurred in Darfur. USING GOOGLE EARTH FOR AN EVENT When hosting an event relating to Darfur, you can create a “tour” to show areas or villages in Darfur.
