  • The goal of our research is to provide programming language support for exploiting coarse-grain concurrency, or concurrency in which each unit of serial computation executes at least several thousand instructions. There are two major reasons why automatic techniques that extract static parallelism from sequential programs cannot fully exploit available coarse-grain concurrency. First, only the programmer has the high-level knowledge necessary to decompose his program into coarse-grain tasks. This information is lost once the program is encoded in a conventional programming language. Second, it is some- times important to exploit irregular, data-dependent concurrency available only as the program runs.   • Here is an example of an attempt to plot parametric data in a scientifically meaningful way, using Microsoft Excel. This example describes an experience using the Office X version for Macintosh. The details may change with different versions, but the principle stays the same – the author must control the appearance of all aspects of the figure. We cannot count on programmers to have correctly guessed our intended use of the application. If you find that it is just too awkward to prepare a proper figure using a computer program, then do it by hand. If you use a hand drawn graph do keep in mind its purpose. If it is to be a working document, not to be presented or published, then you may want to make it as large as you can, ignoring margins, for maximum accuracy. For a paper or presentation, just keep the figure well within the margins of your sheet of graph paper, since the purpose is to illustrate the result, not to use the graph as a working document. You don't need to fill up all available space. If you submit a manuscript for publication or conduct a formal presentation, then you will probably have to prepare a computer generated figure.   • Eclipse is a framework for IDEs. It provides the infrastructure for the IDE, and then the IDE is completed by using a plug-in for a particular programming language. Plug-ins exist for Java (which was its first application), C/C++, Python, Perl and many others. Eclipse is multi-platform, runnable on Linux, Windows , etc. Eclipse came out of the Websphere project at IBM. Though the Eclipse project is now fully open-source, it is still strongly supported by IBM. In this tutorial, we will describe in step by step how to edit, compile and execute a C project using Eclipse in your EPS 254 lab computer. Step 1: Staring Eclipse Log in to the Linux side of your machine. Start up Eclipse by typing eclipse in a command window.   • GNU SASL is an implementation of the Simple Authentication and Security Layer framework and a few common SASL mechanisms. SASL is used by network servers (e.g., IMAP, SMTP) to request authentica- tion from clients, and in clients to authenticate against servers. GNU SASL consists of a library (‘libgsasl’), a command line utility (‘gsasl’) to access the library from the shell, and a manual. The library includes support for the framework (with authentication functions and application data privacy and integrity functions) and at least partial support for the CRAM-MD5, EXTERNAL, GSSAPI, ANONYMOUS, PLAIN, SECURID, DIGEST-MD5, LOGIN, and NTLM mechanisms. The library is easily ported because it does not do network communication by itself, but rather leaves it up to the calling application. The library is flexible with regards to the authorization infrastructure used, as it utilize a callback into the application to decide whether a user is authorized or not. GNU SASL is developed for the GNU/Linux system, but runs on over 20 platforms including most major Unix platforms and Windows, and many kind of devices including iPAQ handhelds and S/390 mainframes. GNU SASL is written in pure ANSI C89 to be portable to embedded and otherwise limited platforms. The entire library, with full support for ANONYMOUS, EXTERNAL, PLAIN, LOGIN and CRAM-MD5, and the front-end that support client and server mode, and the IMAP and SMTP protocols, fits in under 60kb on an Intel x86 platform, without any modifications to the code.
