An Open Source Portal for Educators

There are hundreds of open source projects ranging from simple email software to publicly dedicated WWW servers and full operating systems. This article describes an online platform for educators with free open source educational systems including wikis, blogs, bulletin boards, Content/Course Management Systems, and MOOs, all open systems which are easily installed and managed. By setting up a content-based server, educators can save and archive their files online easily, and integrate their online resources without needing web design skill. With full control of these different educational tools, educators can form a collaborative learning community based on their teaching goals. Thus teachers and students can build an online community as partners. They can learn from and with others, share and try out web learning tools, distribute leadership and inspiration, and support and interact with others from all over the world.

Niklaus Wirth of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology {ETH] waspresented the 1984 ACM A. M. Ihring Award at the Association’s Annual Conference in San Francisco in October in recognition of his outstanding work in developing a sequence of innovative computer languages: Euler’ ALGOL-W, Modula, and Pascal. Pascal, in particular, has become significant pedagogically and has established a foundation for future research in the areas of computer language, systems, and architecture. The hallmarks of a Wirth language are its simplicity, economy of design, and high-quality engineering, which result in a language whose notation appears to be a natural extension of algorithmic thinking rather than an extraneous formalism.

The RFL 98 TMX (Fig. 1) is a programmable telemetry transmitting module, capable of operating within wide input and output parameter ranges. It uses Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques to produce telemetry signals, having greater stability than conventional analog telemetry devices. The operating characteristics of the RFL 98 TMX can be changed by using the RFL 9800 Programmer/Calibrator, which plugs into a dedicated connector on the front of the module. RFL 98 TMX modules are designed for use in anRFL 9800 Series chassis. Each module requires five horizontal units (5E) of chassis space. Power and data connections are made through an RFL 98 DATA I/O 19-point I/O module, which is installed in the chassis directly behind the module.

STXM 5.3.2 User Manual

In Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM) a micro focused soft x-ray beam is generated by a zone plate, illuminates the sample and the transmitted x-rays are detected. Transmission images are obtained by a raster scan of the sample. Spectra are obtained in point, line or image mode by acquiring signal at multiple photon energies. The 5.3.2STXM is an interferometrically controlled device mounted on a dedicated bending magnet beamline. The user controls both the beamline and the microscope from a single computer.

The pedagogy of physics education has become the focus of increasing research. This project has applied such research to focus on the issue of introductory computer programming for physics students. It is concluded that teaching programming is both necessary and beneficial for physics students and may improve their performance on their degree. The choice of programming language for an introductory course is considered, and the Python programming language is selected. Questionnaire results from physics and engineering introductory courses are presented, and conclusions drawn from these results. The report finishes by presenting best practice suggestions to improve the enthusiasm and retention of material by the students.
