  • MaUsE DoubleClick March 2006
  • What you are looking at is the March 2007 edition of the MaUsE DoubleClick monthly newsletter from the Macin- tosh Users East, (MaUsE), a motley collection of mostly harmless cranks who reside in Southern Ontario with their motley collection of old and new Macintosh computers. Unlike previous issues, the March 2007 DoubleClick is published using Quark XPress 7. This issue was created with help from an OWC Mercury Extreme 1.4 GHz G4 Power Macintosh AGP Graphics tower, (with our thanks to OWC), and a 1 GHz G4 iBook. A Kodak DX7590 is used for all pictures. Everything not specifically attributed to someone else can be blamed on me. Back issues can be downloaded from the website. Submissions from MaUsE Club members are almost always welcome. Send articles to < mause.doubleclick@gmail.com >, especially if there are files or pictures attached. I have never refused a submission yet. There is always room for an- other piece on ANY Mac-related topic and I’ll make room if there isn’t. I would like your submissions. But I won’t beg. Apple, Macintosh, and the Apple logo are trademarks of Apple Computer, Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. The MaUsE (Macintosh Users East) is an in- dependent Mac user group and has not been authorized, sponsored, or otherwise approved of by Apple Computer, Inc. Its very much like they don?t even know we exist. Download MaUsE DoubleClick March 2006

  • Yahoo! BLUEPRINT Mobile Application Platform
  • The Blueprint language is an XML markup set based partly on XForms. Applications are hosted on your own Web server, which must respond to HTTP requests from Yahoo!’s server by returning valid Blueprint pages; Yahoo’s server acts as an intermediary between your application and the end-user’s hand-held device. To host a Blueprint application, you must submit a package containing configuration and resource files to Yahoo!. The application package does not contain any Blueprint markup or scripting code; these are supplied directly by your server at runtime. There are several ways to deploy a Blueprint application. Options include browser-based Mobile Sites, Yahoo! Go Widgets, and stand-alone Mobile Apps (when available) Getting Started: 1 Download the SDK at mobile.yahoo.com/devcenter/downloads 2 Read the documentation at developer.yahoo.com/mobile/blueprint 3 Build your service on your own server and return Blueprint XML. 4 Read the Deployment Guide at developer.yahoo.com/mobile/blueprintdeployguide and publish your service at mobile.yahoo.com/developers/manage Download pdf Yahoo! • Maya 7 Tutorial
  • The Maya interface Now that Maya is running, you first need to understand what you are seeing. There are a lot of items displayed in the Maya user interface. The best way to begin is to learn the fundamental tools and then learn additional tools as you need them. Begin by learning some of the main tools. The Maya workspace The Maya workspace is where you conduct most of your work within Maya. The workspace is the central window where your objects and most editor panels appear. When you start Maya for the first time, the workspace displays by default in a perspective window, or panel. There are the other components of the default perspective view panel: - The panel is labeled persp at the bottom to indicate that you are viewing the Maya scene from a perspective camera view. - The panel has its own menu bar at the top left corner of the panel. These menus allow you to access tools and functions related to that specific panel. - The grid is displayed with two heavy lines intersecting at the center of the Maya scene. This central location is called the origin. The origin is the center of Maya's 3D world, and with all object's directional values measured from this location. Download pdf Maya 7 Tutorial
  • How to Open Microsoft Office 2007 Files
  • You may already know that along with Office 2007, Microsoft introduced a new file format that is not compatible with older versions of Office. If you haven’t upgraded to Office 2007 or are using Mac OSX then you won’t be able to automatically open Word documents that carry the .docx extension or PowerPoint Presentations (.pptx). If you are using an older version of Office in Windows and attempt to open a .docx or .pptx file, you may be prompted with a message to install the Microsoft Compatibly Pack (which you should do) or you could get an error message. On a Mac, a .docx file will show up as a .zip file that you won’t be able to open in Word. This means that an instructor using Office 2003 could have trouble opening a Word 2007 document that a student submits in Blackboard. For file sharing between Office 2007 and older versions, one solution is for the Office 2007 user to save documents as compatible .doc or .ppt formats. Understandably, it might not always be convenient to request that an Office 2007 user resave all of the documents they’ve sent you. If you are using an older version of Office and need to open or convert .docx or .pptx files then you have the option to install Microsoft’s Compatibility Pack, File Format Converter for Mac, or Word or PowerPoint Viewers. Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Windows Installing the Compatibility Pack will enable Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, and Office 2003 users to be
  • Web (2.0) Mining: Analyzing Social Media
  • The past few years have seen the advent of Web-based social media systems such as blogs, wikis, media-sharing sites and message forums. Such Web2.0 systems have a significant amount of user generated content, and have become an important new way to publish information, engage in discussions and form communities on the Internet. Their reach and impact is significant with tens of millions of people providing content on a regular basis around the world. Governments, corporations, traditional media companies and NGOs are working to understand how to adapt to them and use them effectively. Citizens, both young and old, are also discovering how social media technology can improve their lives and give them more voice in the world. We must better under- stand the information ecology of these new publication methods in order to make them and the information they provide more useful, trustworthy and reliable. Doing this requires mining such systems to find communities based on a combination of topic, bias, and underlying beliefs; authors and blogs are most influential within a given community; from where do particular beliefs or ideas originate and how do they spread; what are the most trustworthy sources of information about a particular topic; and what opinions and beliefs characterize a community and how do these opinions change. The Blogosphere is part of the Web and therefore shares most of it’s general characteristics. It differs, however, in some ways that impact how we can model it and use the model to help extract information from it.
