Manual for Unbound on WindowsThis manual aims to provide information about the Unbound server on the Windows platform. Included is installation, uninstallation and some information on configuration specific for Windows. Full details of operating a DNS resolver are not part of this document, and can better be documented in a platform independent document.
What is Unbound and what is DNSSEC
Unbound is a DNS resolver. It supports validation, caching, and DNSSEC. It supports NSEC and NSEC3, Ipv4 and Ipv6. Unbound is written for Unix (posix) machines, and runs on FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and Linux (Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, ...). This document is about the Windows version.
The service that unbound provides is that it performs DNS lookups, and can perform DNSSEC validation on the result. If the result is bad, it is not returned to the client (who sees a temporary error in name resolution). Applications that support DNSSEC can ask to see the verification result. DNSSEC is a standard for securing the information in the DNS. Your validator needs to have public keys to check the signatures on the data. DNSSEC is explained more fully on http://www.dnssec.net pages.
The unbound package for windows provides DNSSEC validation – the client that verifies the signatures published by authoritative DNS servers on the internet.

AJAX delivers a rich user interface by displaying more dynamic content. Another common technique is Real Simple Syndications feeds (RSS), an XML based standard that allows subscribers to promote information feeds. This is most commonly used to subscribe to blogs and news articles. AJAX and Rich Internet Application (RIA) clients are enhancing client-end interfaces in the browser itself. XML is making a significant impact at both presentation and transport (HTTP/HTTPS) layers. To some extent XML is replacing HTML at the presentation layer while SOAP is becoming the XML-based transport mechanism of choice.
With Web 2.0, the functionality and experience of the sites become the primary focus, and the technology empowering the dynamic content is hidden behind the scenes to the average user. Yet the web applications underneath the polished finish remain just as complex, and add a variety of new and often unproven or unsecured technologies to the back end. This is a User’s guide, not a hardware review. I’m not testing the board, rather I live with it. The Challenge
Two of these mission-critical systems include SAP Advanced Planning and Optimization (APO) and SAP Business Warehouse (BW). Both systems have four separate environments: technical sandbox, development, test and production. They require a total of eight separate databases and these databases were frequently running out of backup space due to extensive growth.
Steve Bury, Senior Technologist in the Enterprise Application Services (EAS) Group, explained, “Without a compression solution we were on the verge of having to acquire additional database backup storage to accommodate database growth. Just adding a few drives was not an option. Most systems’drivebays were full so we would have been required to add both new drivebays as well as additional controllers. A far more expensive alternative would have been to replace all existing drives with larger ones.”
The Quest Solution
Today the Microsoft EAS Group is using LiteSpeed™ for SQL Server to help compress and speed up the back- up process on all SAP systems: R/3, GTS, APO and BW.
