DownloadModel the perfect 3D face in MayaWant to get your head around 3D modelling? We use Maya to show you how to build an animatable face feature by feature…
There are many ways in which to model a head in 3D. In this tutorial, we'll look at polygon modelling with subdivision smoothing formesh refinement. This approach enables you to create the topology of the face mesh in a very direct and hands-on manner. With NURBS modelling, creating a human head can be problematic, and the best method involves stitching multiple surfaces together. This takes an awful lot of planning and isn’t a method you can jump straight into. Polygon modelling enables you to correct mistakes more easily.
Correct topology (the way a surface is structured) is the single most important aspect of head modelling. We'll be creating special topological structures, known as ‘edge loops', which outline areas of the face and mimic the rings of muscle underthe skin. Without properloops, a head will be difficult to animate. We’ll also be making sure all the polygons have fourvertices (called quads). A mesh of all quads is less likely to pinch when smoothed and animated. Although this tutorial uses Maya, the principles employed are applicable whateverapp you use.

Sadly, it's no Disney story - in fact it's more likely to have been pulled from the pages of the Brothers Grimm. Whilst writing the EJB modules for our JGenerator product, we started punting an email back and forth containing all the issues we had with EJB. And there were many. Before we knew it we ended up with 101 howlers. In this article we present an edited version of the email. It isn't a complete list and there may be some overlapping issues. If there is enough interest we will turn it into a more formal analysis.
Before you flame us for chasing after your sacred cow with a big stick, all three of us have belonged to the "pro-Java" lobby since Java was in its first beta, and we still do. We have evangelised Java at every company we have worked at. However, EJB just presents so much that is wrong and messed up that we felt we had to speak out.
The 101 issues are divided into the following categories:
• Conceptual
• Design
• Development
• Deployment
• Runtime
• Knock-On Effects
And finally there's a conclusion, containing some heartfelt suggestions for improving the EJB spec. We want Java and J2EE to succeed. We want it to remain the platform for developing server-side applications. We just hope that somebody at Sun is paying attention…

For a relatively new technology, there are already several different development tools and a platform standard already available. Some of the development tools are still in beta, and as you can guess new ideas are already in the works. This application note is a guide to what tools are available for application development. This application note will be updated as new tools become available.
As of this writing there are a couple of .NET MF platform types available for application development: generic .NET MF boards for embedded systems and Windows® SideShow- compatible devices. SideShow is an application that runs on .NET MF, but it is also a specific standard. The .NET MF device must adhere to the SideShow standard. At a minimum to run SideShow, a device must have an LCD, communications port, and a set of buttons for navigation (up, down, right, and left), selection, menu, and back. The device is simple enough that many .NET MF platforms could run SideShow. OEMs use the .NET Micro Framework porting kit to port .NET MF to a specific device. Porting is a separate development process that we will not cover here. Once the port is complete, application development takes place in Visual Studio.
At a minimum, .NET MF application development requires Visual Studio 2005 or higher and the .NET Micro Framework SDK. SideShow requires some addition tools. It was BMW’s policy to develop new platforms for its series of cars every 7 to 8 years. New platforms were not simply modifications, but completely new structures. According to Friedrich Nitschke, manager for the BMW 3 series development project, there were three goals for the new 3 series platform that came to market in the 1999 model year.
First, it was to generate the highest level of customer satisfaction in its class. Second, it was to utilize the best processes available within BMW. Third, it was to generate the most profit of any BMW series.
