  • Web 2.0 and beyond – changing the map, anywhere, any device
  • We have seen Web 2.0 technologies used to create new web GIS applications. In this paper Eamon Walsh, Chief Technology Officer for eSpatial examines technologies progressing the industry from the first Web 2.0 GIS applications. Key new capabilities include: • Annotating and updating spatial data rather than just viewing and searching, using “pure web” technologies rather than desktop GIS tools. • Data input from other consumer devices, such as cell phones. • Working with organizations’ own data (including large databases) rather than just points of interest on standard maps. Technologies considered include: • AJAX • Data input from cell-phones, including innovative mechanisms for determining location. Examples will be presented, including from a multi-disciplinary research project in this area - “ICING”, being carried out by a group including city governments, technology providers, and universities ( http://fp6-project-icing.eu ). We also look at how these capabilities are now moving from “mash-ups” to eGovernment and commercial systems, for both public access and internal use. Such systems range from “eCommunity” through to more traditional GIS areas such as Defense. In this we consider the requirements that prompted some organizations to move from sites based on “mash-ups” to systems built using commercial geospatial technology deployed in-house. • How Web 2.0 technologies move Talent Management
  • For many of today’s companies, a greater volume of work is expected from a limited number of employees. This environment makes it essential for companies to have a strategy in place to nurture and track employee talent. A lack of effective talent management can critically impact business operations and employee productivity. For example, companies without adequate sales and support training programs take longer to bring new products to market; customer retention issues arise from poorly trained support representatives; and employee productivity remains low when workforce talent is not aligned with business processes and goals. Since the 1990s, the process of talent management has been utilized by companies to develop workers’ skills, improve overall performance, and ultimately enhance the corporate bottom line. Today, forward-looking companies have begun to develop talent that is aligned with their business by tapping into online communities—known collectively as Web 2.0 technologies—such as blogs, wikis, and social networks. This paper discusses the morphing of traditional talent management into a more sophisticated, collaborative method of cultivating employee skills using Web 2.0 technologies. Transforming traditional Talent Management Talent management—the acquisition and development of employee talent—has become somewhat of a buzzword due to factors such as globalization and outsourcing to foreign markets. One key aspect of talent management is performance management: how companies develop and rate individual employee performance. Yet talent management equates to far more than performance management. It is an overarching umbrella that encompasses the means by which companies attract, develop, promote, and retain their employees. The components of talent management

  • Writing Secure ASP Scripts
  • This paper briefly describes several common classes of coding error generally encountered when auditing web applications running on the Active Server Pages (ASP) platform. The paper is broken down into three broad sections, each of which addresses several common coding problems. The following is a list of the common errors that are discussed in this document, divided into three broad categories. The remainder of the document deals with each of these problems in turn. Any ASP code samples assume that the default language is VBScript, but all of the points apply equally to JavaScript. Equally, all occurrences of the SQL language assume that Microsoft SQL Server is being used as the back – end database. Input validation Insufficient validation of fields in SQL queries Email handling problems Parent path problems Predictability and secure management of state Poor randomness Predictable session identifiers Session state manipulation bugs Poor credential management Source maintenance problems Improper source and data file maintenance Debug code Hardcoded credentials Error messages/error handling Classes of problem Input validation Input validation errors are probably the most common form of problem encountered when auditing ASP applications. Three of the most common classes of input validation error are: Insufficient validation of fields in SQL queries Email handling problems Parent path problems We will address each of these classes of error in turn. • How do I Apply the Microsoft Excel 2007 Analysis Toolpack Regression Chart Bug Workaround?
  • There is a known issue in the Analysis ToolPak of Microsoft Excel 2007. The Regression tool in the Analysis ToolPak in Excel 2007 does not display residual and line fit plots correctly. For more information on this problem please see: http://itinfo.mit.edu/article.php?id=8494 This issue has been documented to Microsoft and a hotfix is currently being developed for release by the end of September 2007. In the meantime, a work around has been implemented for users who need to use the Regression Tool. Step Procedure 1 Once a regression analysis is run, users will only see one residual plot for the first column of data. Any additional residual plots and all line fit plots will be missing (this is the bug; see picture below). The workaround involves an Excel Add-In that has been installed on all Haas Terminal Servers. The workaround installs a button called Fix Regression Charts which is located under the Data Analysis button on the Excel 2007 menu Download pdf How do I Apply the Microsoft Excel 2007 Analysis Toolpack Regression Chart Bug Workaround?
