  • Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) is easy-to-use, powerful, open standards-based, desktop management software for all your networked Macs. IT professionals can remotely control and configure systems, install software, offer live online help to end users, and assemble detailed software and hardware reports for an entire Mac network. You can use Apple Remote Desktop to: • Manage client computers and maintain, upgrade, and distribute software • Collect more than 200 system-information attributes for any Mac on your network. Store the results in an SQL database and view the information using one of several hardware or software reports. • Provide help and remote assistance for users when they encounter problems • Interact with users by sending text messages, observing and controlling users’ screens, and sharing their screens with other client users With Apple Remote Desktop software, you can access your office computer, documents, and applications while you’re away from the office. Used in a classroom, Apple Remote Desktop enhances the learning experience and allows teachers to monitor and control students’computers. In corporate environments, it’s the ideal solution for managing remote systems, reducing administration costs, and increasing productivity. Using This Guide The ARD Administrator’s Guide contains chapters to help you use Remote Desktop. It contains overviews and explanations about ARD’s features and commands. It also explains how to install and configure ARD on clients, how to administer client computers, and how to use Remote Desktop to interact with computer users. In addition, this guide is provided on the ARD installation disc and on the Apple Remote Desktop support website as a fully
  • Plotting Data with Microsoft Excel
  • Here is an example of an attempt to plot parametric data in a scientifically meaningful way, using Microsoft Excel. This example describes an experience using the Office X version for Macintosh. The details may change with different versions, but the principle stays the same – the author must control the appearance of all aspects of the figure. We cannot count on programmers to have correctly guessed our intended use of the application. If you find that it is just too awkward to prepare a proper figure using a computer program, then do it by hand. If you use a hand drawn graph do keep in mind its purpose. If it is to be a working document, not to be presented or published, then you may want to make it as large as you can, ignoring margins, for maximum accuracy. For a paper or presentation, just keep the figure well within the margins of your sheet of graph paper, since the purpose is to illustrate the result, not to use the graph as a working document. You don't need to fill up all available space. If you submit a manuscript for publication or conduct a formal presentation, then you will probably have to prepare a computer generated figure. PROGRAM DEFAULT Table 1 represents measurements of heights of tree seedlings as they were allowed to grow. If you haven't much experience plotting with Excel you might want to open a new spreadsheet, enter the data, and follow along with the example. The data were

  • Defeating Compiler-level Buffer Overflow Protection
  • BUFFER OVERFLOW ATTACK SARE THE most popular method intruders use to gain remote and privileged access to computer systems. Programs that fail to use appropriate bounds checking can allow an attacker to write data beyond the intended boundaries of a buffer and thus possibly corrupt control structures in the program. This enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the same privilege as the victim process. An attacker’s preference is usually to overwrite the saved instruction pointer that is pushed onto the stack before a function call or to overwrite a function pointer that will be used later in the program. It is also possible to use these attacks simply to overwrite other data. This kind of attack is harder to prevent but, fortunately, is less common than the previous type and is not discussed here. Buffer overflows first gained attention with the release of the famed Morris worm which exploited a buffer overflow in fingerd [1]. Despite the attack used in the Morris worm, buffer overflows did not become popular until the release of two papers that detailed the discovery and exploitation of these vulnerabilities [2,3]. This paper discusses vulnerabilities in two compiler-level protection mechanisms, StackGuard and Point-Guard. While this paper takes a critical look at both of these solutions, it does not intend to make them seem insignificant. The attacks described in this paper help to show how StackGuard and PointGuard should be complemented to construct a more complete protection system. • Video Library: Silverlight 1.1 Case Example
  • For our Silverlight 1.1 example, we chose to port our Silverlight 1.0 example to 1.1. This provides a good feel for the differences between the two versions and for how to port applications from 1.0 to 1.1, and, in particular, it gives us an opportunity to see what is better about developing for 1.1. This chapter doesn’t duplicate the in-depth explanation of Chapter 7; instead, it focuses on the main differences and changes between the 1.0 and 1.1 versions of the example application, Lumos. So it is recommended that you review Chapter 7 first to get familiarity with the solution. You can view the Silverlight 1.1 version of the Lumos application online by visiting http://labs.infragistics.com/wrox/silverlight1_0/chapter8. Also please note that the source code for the Lumos application is included along with the other code from the book and is available for download from www.wrox.com. However, to keep the file size of the download manageable, the code for the Lumos application available for download does not include the video clips from the full application. This means that the buttons will not work (due to missing videos), but it should be sufficient to get the idea across. You can download a cou- ple of the videos separately, however, to see them in action. Download pdf Video Library: Silverlight 1.1 Case Example
  • What does Web 2.0 have to do with databases?
  • Web 2.0 is a buzzword we have been hearing for over 2 years. According to Wikipedia, it hints at an improved form of the World Wide Web where technologies such as weblogs, social bookmarking, RSS feeds, photo and video sharing, based on an architecture of participation and democracy that encourages users to add value to the application as they use it. Web 2.0 enables social networking on the Web by allowing users to contribute content, share it, rate it, create a network of friends, and decide what they like to see and how they want it to look like. In this panel, we propose to explore what Web 2.0 has to do with databases. Among the questions we will ask are: Are we going to be building new kinds of databases with Web 2.0? What does it mean when 1 million people are building a database as a collaborative effort? What is a new notion of schemas and queries that we need to develop for such scenarios? The main point of controversy is that while some people think that Web 2.0 requires a new data management infrastructure, others view it as a great opportunity to integrate many ”small” distributed databases which store users and content. We finish the panel by asking the question: Are there databases we can build now that could not be built earlier because we have mass collaboration?
