  • Microsoft Application Center & iControl - Case Study
  • The goal for F5 and Microsoft® was to enable applications to send control messages to network devices, providing a layer between the network and the application as it added new intelligence. With this capability, the network can inform applications about availability, and the application instructs the network on where to direct traffic – without manual intervention and its associated costs. With this highly available, extremely secure solution in place, enterprises can expect increased ROI from their Web applications. Challenge Today’s applications consist of many bits and pieces that a limited workforce of skilled Web administrators may not have the time or resources to adequately manage and control. And efficiently managing application deployment and availability for large-scale web applications from multiple locales has been difficult at best. “Customers are moving from a client-server architecture to a predominantly web-based distributed architecture,” said Garth Fort, Group Project Manager, Microsoft. “Microsoft’s .NET vision is about evolving our tools and our platform to help customer build the next generation applications. F5 Networks has built-out a comprehensive suite of products to manage the delivery of those applications in a distributed environment. It’s an ideal fit.” The goal for both F5 and Microsoft was to enable applications to send control messages to network devices, providing a layer between the network and the application as it added new intelligence. With this capability, the network can inform applications about availability, for instance, and the application instructs the network on where to direct traffic – without manual intervention. • Google Earth User Guide
  • Google Earth, a tool that combines satellite imagery, maps, terrain, and 3D buildings, has partnered with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) to bring forth tangible proof of the devastation that is taking place in Darfur. It is a particularly good advocacy tool because it gives a clear visual representation of what is taking place in Darfur. Use this guide for tips on how to use Google Earth to move Darfur as a significant issue on your campus. USING GOOGLE EARTH TO FURTHER THE CAUSE Google Earth uses symbols to identify damaged and destroyed villages and the location of refugee camps and Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camps. Google Earth’s maps of the region, pictures of refugee camps, and videos of survivors can be used in presentations by students, faculty, and professionals to show the extent of the devastation that has occurred in Darfur. Use Google Earth in addition to PHR’s other advocacy materials to show your classmates, faculty members, and fellow activists the atrocities that have occurred in Darfur. USING GOOGLE EARTH FOR AN EVENT When hosting an event relating to Darfur, you can create a “tour” to show areas or villages in Darfur. The tour can become part of a Powerpoint presentation at your event. Images from Google Earth can also be integrated into advertisements or used for a photo exhibit. JUST CHECKING THAT THERE ARE NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENTS? Incorporate Google Earth into Presentations or Discussions at the following events: Art Show Community Forum Conference or Panel of experts Symposium Cultural Fair Lecture Powerpoint Slideshow Workshop In addition, users can post videos

  • The security risks of AJAX/web 2.0 applications
  • The web 2.0 concept is not sufficiently defined to allow a critical discussion of it, but we can discuss AJAX (asynchronous Javascript and XML). This concept, which underpins many web 2.0 sites, repackages and applies existing technologies to achieve a new structure for internet applications. Unfortunately, increased flexibility creates conditions for new security problems. To understand how AJAX alters the security landscape for web application testing it is necessary to show the fundamental differences between it and traditional internet application models. Traditional internet model A web browser requests a webpage, normally indicating that the request is being processed by animating a logo and altering the status bar. Internet Explorer, for example, animates the chequered flag. Figure 1 summarises this interaction. When the user clicks on a link, an HTTP Get request is sent to the server. The web server deals with the request, and sends the web page to the client. If the client is to send information back to the server, another request is made following the same process. Under this synchronous ‘click-and-wait’ communication method, information is exchanged by requesting and receiving whole web pages. While waiting for the server, the user loses the focus of the application and cannot interact with it. This loss of focus has long been a source of dissatisfaction with traditional web applications, and if the wait for a round trip from the server is sufficiently long, users may leave the site. The AJAX-enabled internet model In this model a client requests a webpage. Once this full page is
