  • Parallel Prefix Network Generation: an Application of Functional Programming
  • Parallel prefix networks are used in priority encoders, and to compute carries in fast adders. A typical microprocessor contains many such networks, and often they are hot- spots. Although parallel prefix (or scan) has been much studied, surprisingly many questions remain unanswered. As geometries shrink, it is not at all clear how to make low power prefix networks with the desired timing properties. Here, I develop a method of writing very highly parameterised parallel prefix network generators in which we specify the combinators used to build the networks and then search for a topology that matches the given delay constraints. This first case study indicates that, in this functional setting, combinators and search fit well together. The resulting prefix networks are both small and shallow, and likely to be useful in low power applications. Parallel prefix is one of the fundamental algorithms of computer science, and it has been much studied. Yet many theoretical and practical questions remain open. On the theoretical side, we have not had good enough methods to design small shallow prefix networks with limited fanout. We have not either had good enough methods of producing networks that are adapted to the delay profile of their inputs. These are the problems that I solve towards the end of this paper. Both of these problems are interesting in practice too. Small networks promise low power, and here I show first results indicating that we can achieve low power in practice, although much remains to be done. The approach that I
  • Configuring Microsoft ActiveSync
  • Step 1. Once you have installed Microsoft ActiveSync turn on your handheld device and connect it to your PC either via the USB cradle or USB cable. If it doesn’t recognise your device straight away you will get the below window. Click Next to get ActiveSync to look for your device. Step 2. Now ActiveSync will go through and look for your device connected to your computer. If you get the following screen it means that the device hasn’t been able to connect to Microsoft ActiveSync You should attempt on the following: • Click Next to get ActiveSync to search for the handheld device again • Unplug the cradle or cable from your machine and plug it into another USB port on your machine, then click next to try connecting again Download pdf Configuring Microsoft ActiveSync
  • Virtools Character Animation Tutorial
  • When creating animations, you should be very careful what you do with the FloorRef. When walking or running, the character should stay at a constant height from the FloorRef object. When jumping, the Character should increase it’s distance from the FloorRef object to give the appearance of translation away from the floor. Characters should ALSO have a “stationary root” that only moves relative to the floor reference (e.g. for walking, jumping etc.) but that does not move constantly (i.e. in an idle animation the root should not move). This is very important if you wish to use your Characters with the Virtools Mulituser Pack, or the dead reckoning algorithm used for predicting distributed objects will not work correctly. In short: Make sure the (stationary) root element does not move at all when the character is in its default (’wait’ or ‘idle’) animation. For other animations make sure the root moves a minimum; in a walk animation along the Z axis for example, make sure that the root moves along the Z axis only - there should be no movement on the X or Y axes. Note: Ensure the animations you create are ‘real’ in the sense that the Character actually performs them and does not ‘pretend’ to perform them - e.g. for a walk animation you should ensure that your character actually moves (translates) in your modeling application, and does not perform the animation in situ (”on the spot” or “in place”). • About Microsoft .NETMicro Framework
  • Built on the .NET foundation and optimized for use in small intelligent devices, .NET Micro Framework combines the reliability and efficiency offered by a .NET enabled managed code environment, the strength of the C# programming language, and the professional Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 tools. Sharing existing .NET code across multiple product lines and platforms results in a shortened development cycle and significantly improved productivity. With its small memory footprint, specific focus on critical features, and Digi’s exclusive support for Ethernet network connectivity, .NET Micro Framework is the ideal choice for smaller network-connected devices utilizing Digi embedded modules in applications that do not rely on the advanced capabilities of a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) or advanced operating system environments such as Microsoft Windows® Embedded CE or Linux®. The Digi JumpStart Kit™ for Microsoft .NET Micro Framework provides an easy-to-use and complete solution for embedded development. The kit includes a Digi embedded module, development board with power supply, sample code and user documentation. The included Microsoft .NET Micro Framework SDK and the fully functional 90-day trial of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 allows professional embedded C# development right out of the box. • ModSecurity Use Case: Web 2.0 Defense with Ajax Fingerprinting and Filtering
  • To combat these new threats one needs to look at different strategies as well. In this paper we shall look at different approaches and tools to improve security posture at both, the server as well as browser ends. Listed below are the key learning objectives: • The need for Ajax fingerprinting and content filtering. • The concept of Ajax fingerprinting and its implementation in the browser using XHR. • Processing Ajax fingerprints on the Web server. • Implementation using ModSecurity for Apache • Strengthening browser security using HTTP response content filtering of untrusted information directed at the browser in the form of RSS feeds or blogs. • Web application firewall (WAF) for content filtering and defense against Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Requirement for Ajax fingerprints and filtering Ajax is being used very liberally in next generation Web applications, forming an invisible layer in the browser’s transport stack and bringing to the fore numerous browser-related attacks, all centered around Ajax. Although Ajax applications hold a lot of promise, there are loopholes being exploited by viruses, worms and malicious attackers in Web 2.0 applications that need to be looked at a little more closely. Ajax hides a lot of server-side critical resources due to its calling mechanism, bringing in sloppiness in coding patterns and fueling vulnerabilities in the server-side application layer as well. Untrusted resource processing from blogs, feeds and mash-ups are making Ajax vulnerabilities relatively easy to exploit. In such situations Ajax request and response fingerprinting and filtering mechanisms can enhance the security posture of Web applications. Web 2.0 applications
