  • Web 2.0 and the Visually Impaired Learners
  • The emergence of Web 2.0 technologies has created opportunities for the visualization of much information on the web. It is, therefore, one of the empowering sources for learning, or so-called e-learning 2.0 (Downes, 2005). Educators are starting to explore the potential of blogs, media-sharing services and other social software - which, although not designed specifically for e-learning, can be used to empower students and create exciting new learning opportunities. During the past few years, Web technology has been rapidly developed in order to increase its functionalities and design; however, this might indirectly increase more barriers to another group of users. To put it differently, those for whom the Web is inaccessible for whatever reason will become increasingly excluded from mainstream life if it is not made accessible to them. The way this information is presented may mean that it is difficult, or impossible, for people with various forms of disability to access it. A visual on a screen is of no use to someone who is blind. Nonetheless, there are many solutions for this problem today and hopefully even more in the near future. This paper will start with the general idea that links the Web 2.0 to the impact of online communication and interaction on persons with disabilities. Then the necessary information about the computer/Internet use and the visually impaired will be described to serve as background knowledge for educators and practitioners in the mainstreamed settings. Next, we will move on with practical implications of Web 2.0 toward visually impaired

  • Visual Studio Tools for Office Sample Chapter
  • Now that we have considered the basic pattern of the Office object models, let us consider how developers pattern and build their Office solutions. There are three patterns that most solutions built using Office follow. • Office automation executable • Office add-in • Code behind an Office document An automation executable is a program separate from Office that controls and automates an Office application. An automation executable can be created with development tools such as Visual Studio .NET 2005. A typical example is a stand-alone console application or Windows Forms application that starts up an Office application and then automates it to perform some task. To start a solution built this way, the user of the solution starts the automation executable that will in turn start up the Office application. Unlike the other two patterns, the automation code does not run in the Office process but runs in its own process and talks cross process to the Office process being automated. An add-in is a class in an assembly (DLL) that Office loads and creates when needed. An add-in runs in process with the Office application rather than requiring that a separate process from the Office application is running. To start a solution built this way, the user of the solution starts the Office application associated with the add-in. • Web 2.0 is the network as platform, spanning all connected devices; Web 2.0 applications are those that make the most of the intrinsic advantages of that platform: delivering software as a continually-updated service that gets better the more people use it, consuming and remixing data from multiple sources, including individual users, while providing their own data and services in a form that allows remixing by others, creating network effects through an “architecture of participation,” and going beyond the page metaphor of Web 1.0 to deliver rich user experiences. eBay Is a Web 2.0 Application! • All auctions (= eBay content) come out of the community • ¼ billion users that do not know The Power of the User • eBay account as a Web 2.0 identity – Combine eBay, PayPal, Skype, Kijiji … – SingleSignOn with other sites – eBay reputation (+ feedback) as a trust criteria • Good chances for eBay – Blogs, reviews will increase the effect The Power of the Item-node • eBay data as nodes in a semantic Web • Data has to agitate as a node – Very good chance as eBay items have a very high reach! Part II is a case study of how the Eclipse Platform was used to build a full-featured Java development environment. Introduction When people speak of Eclipse, they very often mean the Eclipse Software Development Kit (SDK) which is both the leading Java™ integrated development environment (IDE) and the single best tool available for building products based on the Eclipse Platform. The Eclipse SDK, a critical piece of the Eclipse tapestry, is a combination of the efforts of several Eclipse projects, including Platform [http://eclipse.org/platform], Java Development Tools (JDT [http://eclipse.org/jdt]), and the Plug-in Development Environment Download Eclipse Platform Technical Overview #2 Manual
