Building a Better Style GuideWhy are style guides so frequently created, but so rarely successful? All too often, businesses ask for a style guide as a means to create a common look and feel, in the belief that it will solve usability problems and establish consistency between applications – only to be disappointed in the results. Even if such a style guide is followed carefully, the resulting interfaces may not meet usability goals.. This paper explores strategies for creating a style guide that is more than a simplistic rules book. By making the style guide part of the process, it can be used to promote a shared vision, to help the product meet business and usability requirements for consistency and…it may actually be used.
All too many projects to improve the usability of a user interface start with a request to create a style guide. To many user-centered designers, a style guide is the documentation of a design – the end of a design process – not a starting point for usability. And yet, we continue to create them, despite that fact that they may do little to address real usability problems or create a common approach to interaction. This paper describes some tactics and techniques for creating style guides that present and organize the appropriate information in a usable structure.
WHAT’S IN A STYLE GUIDE?
Style guides can be classified as platform (or language) guide, general design guides, or corporate style guides for a specific application. Although they overlap in many ways, each has a differentHow to implement Web-based Groupware Systems based on WebDAVIn general, the World Wide Web has a high potential as a platform for distributed groupware systems. Authors create and change documents locally and upload them to a Web server, where they can be accessed by their collaborators. However, Web browsers and servers which implement the protocol HTTP are mostly limited to provide reading access to Web documents. For this reason, existing Web-based groupware systems (e.g. the BSCW system) are implemented using client/server side scripting. These scripts are used to implement the basic operations needed for this kind of applications.
The protocol WebDAV (World Wide Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) which was developed as an extension of HTTP/1.1 by the WebDAV working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and defines new methods which offer additional services for editing and managing files on remote Web servers in a structured way (e.g. locking, version management, metadata management, etc.). When using WebDAV, the Web is becoming a rich infrastructure for collaborative applications, where the Web-DAV methods can be used to implement the basic operations needed (e.g. copy, delete, upload, assign metadata to documents, etc.). Scripting can be used in this context as well, but not for implementing the basic tasks of collaboration, but to simplify maintenance of the application.
The paper is structured as follows: In Section 2 we introduce the functionality of WebDAV. In Section 3, we briefly summarize related work in the area of implementing Web-based groupware systems and we give a short description of two systems, BSCW and DReSS. As a vehicle for learning these techniques, we develop a model of a whimsical structure that I have called the Monkish Shot Tower after a group of imaginary Monks who have refined the technology of manufacturing lead shot for firearms, and the like. The tower is designed around the perfect number 7, features an external spiral stair, an elaborate canopy on top, and a hole down the centre. The final structure is illustrated in Figure 1 below.
This tutorial will introduce the following concepts and techniques: • simple solid modelling with solid primitives & CSG operations (the tower); • construction of complex solid objects (stair and landing); • user coordinate systems and positioning of objects (external stairs); • advanced use of the CSG operations (tapering the stairs); • simple surface modelling (the roof canopy and handrails); • surface modelling versus solid modelling (the handrails); • meshed surfaces (the landing “sails” for shading).

The heart of a speech recognition system is known as the speech recognition engine. The speech recognition engine recognizes speech input and translates it into text that an application understands. The application decides what to do with the recognized text. It can transcribe it literally for dictation, or it can act on it for commands.
Applications can access the speech recognition engine through a speech recognition API. For ViaVoice, this API is known as the Speech Manager API, or SMAPI, for short. SMAPI is a conventional API. This means that the API is defined as part of the resource; in this case, SMAPI is defined as part of the speech engine.
