Languages like C and C++ allow a programmer to write code at a very detailed level which has good execution speed (especially in the case of C). But in most applications, execution speed is not important, and in many cases one would prefer to write at a higher level. For example, for text-manipulation applications, the basic unit in C/C++ is a character, while for languages like Perl and Python the basic units are lines of text and words within lines. One can work with lines and words in C/C++, but one must go to greater effort to accomplish the same thing.
The term scripting language has never been formally defined, but here are the typical characteristics:
• Used often for system administration, Web programming, text processing, etc.
• Very casual with regard to typing of variables, e.g. little or no distinction between integer, floating-point or string variables. Arrays can mix elements of different “types,” such as integers and strings. Functions can return nonscalars, e.g. arrays. Nonscalars can be used as loop indexes. Etc.
• Lots of high-level operations intrinsic to the language, e.g. string concatenation and stack push/pop.
• Interpreted, rather than being compiled to the instruction set of the host machine

• Degrades ride quality and driver comfort.
• Shortens the life of tires, bearings, shock absorber, and other suspension components. Vibration is the most noticeable effect of imbalance.
• It is dependent on vehicle speed and may be felt in the steering wheel, seats or floor board.
• It often first becomes apparent between 40 and 45 mph and changes in magnitude with greater speeds. As these two have now become the most prominent purveyors of platforms and software application technology in the computer industry worldwide, we feel it would be instructive for business and organisational users to have a plain-language analysis of these key components of the software they use. We will also attempt a very simple quantitative analysis of what portions of both licenses devote to giving users rights, taking away user rights, and limiting the extent to which users can make legal claims or sue the purveyors of the software from both camps.
The Microsoft Windows XP Professional End User License Agreement (the EULA hereafter) was selected as representative of the current-generation license provided by Microsoft for business-grade systems. The GNU General Public License (the GPL hereafter) has been selected as the most commonly-used Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) license. The GPL is used by well-known platforms and software technology such as Linux, GNOME, KDE, OpenOffice.org and MySQL. While much of what we will cover may be known to some readers, we believe that there is widespread ignorance of both the EULA and the GPL. We will thus make every effort to provide a clear, simplified analysis of both, to assist in the better understanding of these licenses which are very important to all users of computers.
