  • Protecting Microsoft Exchange
  • Though the technological reasons to protect Exchange systems may be self evident, there are quantifiable fiscal reasons to protect these messaging systems as well. The dollar value of any given data-set may be difficult to calculate, but the cost-savings of avoiding even a single Exchange outage can easily be determined. In most organizations, there are at the very least one or two subsets of end-users who cannot continue to work without these systems functioning. Even if these groups might not regularly produce revenue in the form of direct sales or billable engagements, salaries, benefits and fixed costs still accrue during an outage. Therefore, the loss of the messaging systems for even a few hours could easily result in thousands of dollars in budget outlay without recouping a single dollar in productivity. For revenue-generating groups, the cost of this downtime is even more easily quantifiable. Avoiding even one of these outages is not only a good idea for the IT department, but for the CFO's office as well. Complete protection of Exchange requires a lot more than management of on-site and off-site tape backups. While traditional tape backup is an excellent tool for long-term archiving, true recovery for the sake of business continuity requires real-time data protection which enables disaster recovery and high availability. Having a solution that is cost-effective, hardware independent and scalable is something every IT manager should seriously consider. This whitepaper is meant to provide a brief technical overview of Microsoft® Exchange Server 2000 and 2003 survivability requirements as well as present

  • The wait is over! Do you remember the revolutionary product announced by OWC and Axiotron? After a short wait, the product, known as the ModBook, was revealed to the public, and the place was - obviously - the Macworld Expo, but before I tell you more, let me first remind you who is behind this product. OWC is a company well known for its products: the iPod, CPU upgrades for Mac and Firewire hard drives, and now they are also known as the first ones that brought a real Mac tablet solution to the world. Axiotron is their manufacturing partner, and together, they created… the MacBook, ladies and gentlemen! The MacBook will be available in three configurations, simply described as “Good”, “Better” and “Best” on the Other World Computing official website. The devices can be pre-reserved now, and you have the complete right to cancel prior to follow up in mid-March/April, and all pre-reserve customers who place and complete an order by the 1st day of March will also receive the GPS option at no additional charge! • Serializing object in XML format in Eiffel.NET Applications
  • This document presents my work as part of course COSC 4080 during fall 2002, under the supervision of Professor Jonathan Ostroff. The initial purpose of the project was to write a reusable component to store Eiffel objects in XML format, and also to investigate a new product from Eiffel Software, namely Eiffel Envision. Eiffel Envision is a plug-in for Visual Studio.NET that facilitate the writing, debugging and testing of Eiffel code in Visual Studio.NET. Needless to say, the integration between Eiffel and the .NET Framework (hereinafter referred to as Eiffel.NET) is not just at the GUI level. Eiffel is now one of the few languages that are .NET compatible. This means that programmers can compile Eiffel code to run on the .NET Common Language Runtime (more on this issue in the next section). This document is written in the form of a tutorial, and it reflects, in a way, the learning curve that I was facing when working on the project. Although the final code for the XML Serialization application is fairly short, I have revised it and restructured it dozens of time; at every step along the way I have learned something new, and realized that the code I have written was wrong, or perhaps it wasn’t efficient. These are the topics that are covered in this document: • Eiffel.NET and Envision – I present a tutorial about the integration between Eiffel and the .NET Framework, including step-by- step examples on how to use Envision, how to create Eiffel.NET applications, how to use
  • Fundamentals of Concurrent Programming for .NET
  • Many developers will have read Herb Sutter’s article “The Free Lunch is Over” which talks about the future speed increases of CPUs. The good news is that they will get significantly faster, but the bad news is that you won’t see all of the possible performance gains unless you write your application to take advantage of them. Over the last few years the increase in clock speeds has slowed down, and chip manufacturers are focussing more and more on concurrent execution of code. Hyperthreading was the first step, which allows a single processor core to execute two threads in parallel, but the future is multi-core chips which will allow many threads to execute truly independently. Intel is already talking about chips with over a hundred cores, so if your code is single-threaded you may only be using one hundredth of the available processing power! This Charteris White Paper introduces the fundamentals that will allow you to begin writing concurrent applications, and is intended to be easier to read than much of the material on this subject. It is targeted at developers who have some experience of developing on the .NET Framework, and ideally in C# as this is my language of choice for the code samples. No prior knowledge of concurrent programming or multi-threading is needed, though even experienced developers in this area may find some new and surprising information. The first section of this paper provides background information about threads, fibers, the thread pool asynchronous methods and events particularly with respect
  • FileMaker for PHP Developers
  • FileMaker is a popular and powerful desktop database application toolkit. Recently, FileMaker, Inc. released a beta version of the FileMaker API for PHP, which allows PHP to more easily talk to the FileMaker Server Advanced product. Learn how to leverage FileMaker’s strengths to deliver complex Web applications in a fraction of the time it would take using a typical SQL database. What is FileMaker? FileMaker is a workgroup productivity toolkit designed to let knowledge workers quickly and easily construct data management systems for themselves. It is often referred to as a database—which it is—but it is more than that. In order to give you a solid understanding of how and when to use FileMaker, I am going to run through a realworld scenario. Spreadsheet Headaches ABC Company sells office supplies. Their catalog team is responsible for publishing product catalogs that are distributed to the sales force for generating new business. Every week or so, the catalog team receives spreadsheets of products that need to be included in upcoming catalogs. Information and images for any new products must be procured from the product manufacturer. Once all the data has been gathered, it is entered into a page layout program and printed. The catalog team finds this process very frustrating, because the spreadsheets are more often similar than not. Any given item might be going into multiple catalogs, so any changes to the item price, for example, must be made in multiple spreadsheets. Even worse, the team members have to pass documents back and forth, making sure to

Zani Observatory, to help minor planet observers in their researches. MPS runs under DOS and it works good also with Windows 95/98 operating systems. MPS contains some executable programs and system files, each routine is a single executable program. Orbital elements database consists of two files: ASTEROID.ELE and ASTEROID.IDX. They should be upgraded anytime using MPCORB.DAT or MPCORBCR.DAT from the Minor Planet Centre. MPS is freely-available on the World Wide Web at the following URL: http://www.uai.it/sez_ast/ You can distribute it freely but the following acknowledgement is welcome if you use this software in any publication:Foglia S., Minor Planet Software rel. 8, 2003, http://www.uai.it/sez_ast/ All programs are written using C language.
