  • Web 2.0: Building Online Communities Using Social Networking Technologies
  • Over the past three years, Internet web sites have been evolving into a series of platforms organizing content and communications among individuals and organizations for the purpose of social networking. Sites like MySpace, YouTube and Wikipedia have shifted online activities from “browsing” to collaborating, interacting and personalizing. MySpace boasts over 100 million accounts, YouTube serves an average of 100 million video streams per day and Wikipedia contains over 1.7 million articles in English edited by users from all over the world. As a result, web design and organizational thinking in this new era needs to be more focused on building event-driven experiences, rather than simply designing information silos ammended with numerous hyperlinks. But how do consumers and businesses keep up with these changes and more importantly how do they exploit the new technologies in ways that benefit customers, employees, and even their industry? This issue of Educational Update is designed for that very purpose. WEB 2.0 Technologies Web 2.0 is the collection of server-based solutions that have allowed the web to become a publishing platform. Instead of the traditional one-way form of web authoring, these solutions invite all Internet users to share, collaborate, and contribute in the process of website development. Users now have an increased ability to contribute text, bookmarks, photos, audio, videos and more to many different websites. This ease of access to web content alters the way users interact with the new world wide web. Users can now build an online social network where community members contribute content, share

  • Command Line Rendering in Maya
  • There are various benefits to rendering using the command line instead of though Maya and this tutorial will guide you through the process on a windows operating platform. If you have a scene that is particularly complex scene or render then having the extra available memory that Maya would have been using if it were open can really help. Using the command line method is also a quick way to change settings for your rendering of multiple files. If you needed to render a low-res preview for a client for example you could do that using this rendering technique rather than having you open up a series of files to edit them all individually. The feature about rendering from the command line that personally I find to be most valuable is that it allows you to set-up a render queue. You can have multiple scene files, for example different shots or render passes and have them render one after another. So you don’t need to baby-sit your computer while rendering. • Parallel Prefix Network Generation: an Application of Functional Programming
  • Parallel prefix networks are used in priority encoders, and to compute carries in fast adders. A typical microprocessor contains many such networks, and often they are hot- spots. Although parallel prefix (or scan) has been much studied, surprisingly many questions remain unanswered. As geometries shrink, it is not at all clear how to make low power prefix networks with the desired timing properties. Here, I develop a method of writing very highly parameterised parallel prefix network generators in which we specify the combinators used to build the networks and then search for a topology that matches the given delay constraints. This first case study indicates that, in this functional setting, combinators and search fit well together. The resulting prefix networks are both small and shallow, and likely to be useful in low power applications. Parallel prefix is one of the fundamental algorithms of computer science, and it has been much studied. Yet many theoretical and practical questions remain open. On the theoretical side, we have not had good enough methods to design small shallow prefix networks with limited fanout. We have not either had good enough methods of producing networks that are adapted to the delay profile of their inputs. These are the problems that I solve towards the end of this paper. Both of these problems are interesting in practice too. Small networks promise low power, and here I show first results indicating that we can achieve low power in practice, although much remains to be done. The approach that I

  • The security risks of AJAX/web 2.0 applications
  • The web 2.0 concept is not sufficiently defined to allow a critical discussion of it, but we can discuss AJAX (asynchronous Javascript and XML). This concept, which underpins many web 2.0 sites, repackages and applies existing technologies to achieve a new structure for internet applications. Unfortunately, increased flexibility creates conditions for new security problems. To understand how AJAX alters the security landscape for web application testing it is necessary to show the fundamental differences between it and traditional internet application models. Traditional internet model A web browser requests a webpage, normally indicating that the request is being processed by animating a logo and altering the status bar. Internet Explorer, for example, animates the chequered flag. Figure 1 summarises this interaction. When the user clicks on a link, an HTTP Get request is sent to the server. The web server deals with the request, and sends the web page to the client. If the client is to send information back to the server, another request is made following the same process. Under this synchronous ‘click-and-wait’ communication method, information is exchanged by requesting and receiving whole web pages. While waiting for the server, the user loses the focus of the application and cannot interact with it. This loss of focus has long been a source of dissatisfaction with traditional web applications, and if the wait for a round trip from the server is sufficiently long, users may leave the site. The AJAX-enabled internet model In this model a client requests a webpage. Once this full page is
