A Generic Toolkit for Converting Web Applications Into High-Interaction HoneypotsWeb application technologies like PHP, CGI, Javascript, and Ajax have made it much easier for people to construct and deploy services on the Internet. Unfortunately, this has opened a wide avenue for new attacks since it is as easy to unintentionally introduce new vulnerabilities into web applications as it is to intentionally introduce new functionality. Consequently, web applications have increasingly been the focus of attackers.
Honeypots are popular and effective tools for studying new attack patterns. A honeypot is an information system resource whose value lies in unauthorized or illicit use of that resource [16]. Honeypots are electronic decoys, that pretend to be normal system but are really waiting to be attacked and compromised for the purpose of tracking attackers. Honeypots are equipped with special monitoring software which makes it easier to study successful attacks in detail. Honeynets are networks of honeypots have proven to be a very effective tool in learning more about Internet crime like credit card fraud [11] or botnets [4] and as sensors in intrusion detection systems.
The simplest form of a honeypot is a real vulnerable system that has been modified to include surveillance methods. Such a system is called a high-interaction honeypots because the attacker is able to fully interact with the honeypot just like a real system. This offers the best potential for analyzing all aspects of an attack, but also introduces risk that the attacker will use the capabilities of the system to attack others. The use of Python has grown steadily over 1990’s to its current state where it is used in a variety of applications and environments.
Python is a interpreted, imperative, weakly-typed programming language. Unlike a compiled language, interpreted programming languages do not have to be compiled. Instead, the source file is translated (a.k.a. interpreted) by another program (the interpreter) when it is executed. Compiled languages, on the other hand, are executed directly by the computer. Since Python is a weakly-typed language, a variable can have different types during a program’s execution. For example, the variable a could represent a number, a string, and a list in succession in Python; this is not allowed in a strongly-typed language.
These notes assume a basic familiarity with programming concepts. In general, it is assumed one has had some programming experience in an object oriented language (such as C++). Concepts such as compiling, functions/procedures, dynamic memory, conditional statements, input/output, modular programming, namespaces, classes, objects, and inheritance should be familiar.
The examples in these notes will be given in Python 2.4. It is assumed that the reader has access to a a Python interpreter. The resources at the end of this document provide links to downloadable versions of the languages.

These notes will start with the basic foundations of an imperative programming language and build towards object-oriented design.Stupid and Useful Microsoft Word TricksYou should be aware that MS Word has several built-in features designed to “autocorrect” the text. This is because the program is designed for business users (for the most part), and often these corrections will not be appropriate for academic papers. However, you should realize that this feature is a problem. Here is a partial list of stupid “auto-corrections” that you might encounter:
1. The computer might try to turn prose text into outline format. You will suddenly observe your work as a numbered list.
2. In a similar fashion, the computer might take an outline and change the format – including its font, indentation, and text size.
3. The computer might try to change URLs into web addresses (highlighted in blue) which can be linked if the computer is online all the time. This is prohibited in MLA format. For example, a web address should read < http://www.mla.org> rather than http://www.mla.org.
4. The computer may convert ordinal numbers (such as 1st) to superscripted text (such as 1st). Most documentation styles do not allow superscripted text.
5. Initially, MS Word sets margins at 1.25 inches. MLA requires 1-inch margins. Consequently, you must correct this manually. To do so, the Mac user must click on the Format option of the menu bar (at the top of the screen), and select Document. Next, select Margins and adjust them to 1 inch. PC users should manually adjust the margin-ruler near the top of the screen.
