  • Preparing a policy or procedure document for UC Santa Cruz’ InfoSlug on-line policy and procedure system is not as mysterious or difficult as you might think. This guide is designed to explain the campus’ policy and procedure framework, to help policy and procedure owners organize their written documentation, and to act as a resource as they navigate the approval process. You will find the information in this “how to” guide helpful if you are responsible for formulating or documenting new or existing policies and procedures. Over the past several years the campus has been actively examining its decision-making processes with an objective of locating decision-making authority at the lowest appropriate levels. Improvements in the campus’ process for documenting policies, procedures, and delegations of authority will enable this effort by addressing a number of issues: 1. Ease of Access. Currently there are too many manuals and loose memos—an information flood. Users don’t know what is important. Policy and procedure manuals that do exist are not always up-to-date and users cannot always find the documents they need to make informed decisions. An up-to-date, on-line system will permit those who use or are directly affected by policies and procedures to have the access they need. 2. Cost Effectiveness. Currently, individual offices must dedicate resources to maintaining files of relevant campuswide policies and procedures.   • Whilst a number of methodological and philosophical difficulties surround its definition, ‘informal learning’ is now acknowledged to be a vital element of education for learners of all ages (Colley et al. 2003). Despite the ‘slippery’ nature of the concept (Girod 1990), there is an emerging consensus that the nature of informal learning is more specific than simply being any learning outside of formal education. At one level informal learning is “undertake[n] individually or collectively, on our own without externally imposed criteria or the presence of an institutionally authorised instructor” (Livingstone 2000, p.493). Thus, whereas formal learning is typically institutionally sponsored, classroom based and structured, informal learning “is not typically classroom based or highly structured, and control of learning rests primarily in the hands of the learner” (Marsick & Watkins 1990, p.12). Yet we should not overlook the fact that informal learning also includes a range of learning stimulated by general interests which is ‘caught not taught’ (Davies 1998). There is growing evidence that many people are engaged in a wide range of technology-based informal learning at home and the community (Cranmer 2006, Impact2 2003, Facer et al. 2003). As Sefton-Green (2005, p.3) concluded from an extensive review of literature in the area: “computers and other aspects of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) allow children and young people a wide variety of activities and experiences that can support learning, yet many of these transactions do not take place in traditional educational settings.   • Exactly how jEdit is started depends on the operating system. For example, on Unix you can run “jedit” at the command line, or select jEdit from a menu; on Windows, you can double-click on the jEdit icon or select it from the Start menu. If jEdit is started while another copy is already running, control is transferred to the running copy, and a second instance is not loaded. This saves time and memory if jEdit is started multiple times. Communication between instances of jEdit is implemented using TCP/IP sockets; the initial instance is known as the server, and subsequent invocations are clients. If you find yourself launching and exiting jEdit a lot, the startup time can get a bit bothersome. If the -background command line switch is specified, jEdit will continue running and waiting for client requests even after all editor windows are closed. When run in background mode, you can open and close jEdit any number of times, only having to wait for it to start the first time. The downside of this is increased memory usage. When running on MacOS X, the -background command-line switch is active by default, so that jEdit conforms to the platform convention that programs should stay open until the Quit command is explicitly invoked by the user, even if all windows are closed. To disable background mode on MacOS X, use the -nobackground switch.   • The development of the Linux USB subsystem started in 1997 and in the meantime it was redesigned many times. This implied various changes of its internal structure and its API too. So it is even hard for experienced device driver developers to keep up to date with all ongoing discussions and current changes. This document should give detailed information about the current state of the USB subsystem and its API for USB device drivers. The first section will deal with the basics of USB devices. You will learn about different types of devices and their properties. Going into detail you will see how USB devices communicate on the bus. The second section gives an overview of the Linux USB subsystem [2] and the device driver framework. Then the API and its data structures will be explained step by step. The last section of this document contains a reference of all API calls and their return codes. The Universal Serial Bus In 1994 an alliance of four industrial partners (Compaq, Intel, Microsoft and NEC) started to specify the Universal Serial Bus (USB).
