DownloadWriting Applications Using PHPMany developers have learned to use PHP over the years because it’s a good solution for creating Web pages and the price is right. The PHP acronym is like many other new acronyms for the Internet—the acronym is recursive (refers back to itself). PHP stands for PHP Hypertext Processor. This general-purpose HTML scripting language works much like ASP (see Chapter 6) or other page description languages you might have used. Essentially, you mix HTML with scripting information. When the PHP process sees HTML, it sends the text directly to the user. It processes any scripting information, and passes the resulting HTML to the user as well.
This chapter helps you discover how PHP works with Amazon Web Services. I’m assuming that you already know something about PHP, but the first two sections provide some suggestions on how to learn more about PHP. Because PHP runs on so many platforms, you’ll also find some suggested resources for getting and installing PHP for your particular server. These instructions might require a little technical knowledge on your part, so make sure you understand what the instructions require before you perform them.
The examples in this chapter show how to use PHP to create an Amazon Web Services application. The first example provides simple instructions for accessing the Web service without any fancy application features. You’ll also find an application that shows how to use PHP with MySQL, an open source database. Ideas, technologies and implications for educationWithin 15 years the Web has grown from a group work tool for scientists at CERN into a global information space with more than a billion users. Currently, it is both returning to its roots as a read/write tool and also entering a new, more social and participatory phase. These trends have led to a feeling that the Web is entering a ‘second phase’—a new, ‘improved’ Web version 2.0. But how justified is this perception?
This TechWatch report was commissioned to investigate the substance behind the hyperbole surrounding ‘Web 2.0’ and to report on the implications this may have for the UK Higher and Further Education sector, with a special focus on collection and preservation activities within libraries. The report argues that by separating out the discussion of Web technologies (ongoing Web development overseen by the W3C), from the more recent applications and services (social software), and attempts to understand the manifestations and adoption of these services (the ‘big ideas’), decision makers will find it easier to understand and act on the strategic implications of ‘Web 2.0’. Indeed, analysing the composition and interplay of these strands provides a useful framework for understanding its significance.
The report establishes that Web 2.0 is more than a set of ‘cool’ and new technologies and services, important though some of these are. It has, at its heart, a set of at least six powerful ideas that are changing the way some people interact. Secondly, it is also important to acknowledge that these ideas are not necessarilyToshiba Qosmio F40/F45-AV Users Manual pdfMobile Computing Toshiba’s energy-saver design Running the computer on battery power Battery Notice Power management Using additional batteries Charging batteries Charging the main battery Charging the RTC battery Monitoring main battery power Determining remaining battery power What to do when the main battery runs low Setting battery notifications Conserving battery power Power Plans Using a hot key to set the Power Plan Changing the main battery Removing the battery from the computer Inserting a charged battery Taking care of your battery Safety precautions Maintaining your battery Disposing of used batteries Traveling tips

The package includes a large collection of tools and utilities including an interactive geometry editor, raytracing and generic framebuffer libraries, a network-distributed image processing and signal-processing capabilitym and an embedded scripting language.
As part of this effort, a multivolume tutorial series is being developed to assist users in the many features of the BRL-CAD package. The “Overview and Instalaiton” guide, which is the first volume in the series, addresses the background, purpose, and strengths of the package; the libraries and utilities included within it, platform-specific installation instructions; and information about bugs and updates. Other volumes focus on advanced features, individual utilities and programming.
