Implementing Mobile Web 2.0This document outlines a chapter in the book Implementing Mobile Web 2.0 by Ajit Jaokar published by futuretext (Feb 2009). It is released separately as a stand-alone chapter. Here, we discuss the role of the next generation SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, referred to as SCWS (Smart card web server) SIM within Mobile Web 2.0. To explain the background, this document includes other sections from the book so that it becomes as complete document in itself.
Synopsis and key ideas
The key ideas behind this chapter are:
• Web 2.0 has already evolved to Cloud computing.
• Inspite of the notion of a ‘Web only’ processing, the cloud needs a client (as is now apparent from the deployment of a browser like Chrome from Google).
• For a mobile ecosystem, there are two possibilities for a Cloud client; The device or The SIM since both are at the edge of the network(for simplicity we discuss a cellular network only i.e. not Wimax, WiFi etc)
• From a network Operator perspective, the SCWS SIM offers a possibility to be the client for the mobile cloud for reasons that we discuss in this chapter.
• The SCWS SIM technology also offers the possibility of accessing mass market devices.

Mobile operators are currently at risk of becoming bit-pipes as a result of the latest web technologies and properties. Competition is becoming very intense and operator revenues are likely to substantially decrease as a result. And by the time a mobile industry standards committee has the chance to meet, analyze and agree on a situation or latest protocol to create and deliver a new service, numerous Web 2.0 sites will have already come and gone.
If mobile operators want to remain relevant, they will have to open the networks and allow innovation to flourish. This is the role of either a Service Delivery Platform, or an effective Service Delivery Environment created by operators and based on their key assets and strengths. In general, a Mobile Network Operator (MNO) has four main assets that ensure competitive advantage compared to content or application service providers (ASPs).
Identity
MNOs have the necessary infrastructure to manage the identity of a subscriber. Once a subscriber is on the network, the MNO can provide identity information to the application provider. There is no need for a new login process when using a service. A Service Delivery Environment should facilitate delivery of subscriber identity to authorised ASPs.

In many ways Ruby strikes the same chord in me that Perl did a decade or more ago. I show Ruby from a Perl perspective. When I first encountered Perl, I found the language to be a little strange coming from a C background. From time to time I would use Perl to write things I would have written in C or shell, and soon Perl was my tool of choice for many tasks. Ruby is having a similar effect on me. Sometimes I prototype Perl code in Ruby, sometimes I just use Ruby for the sake of seeing if I arrive at a different solution using a di?erent language.
Like Perl, Ruby makes programming fun, but in a different way. Ruby borrows features from many languages, and one of those is Perl. I can simply translate Perl code into Ruby if I want. I will use the Soundex function as an example, as the algorithm is simple and my Perl implementation will reveal something about my abilities as a programmer. The Soundex algorithm is a simple hashing of the letters of a word to a four character code which brings similar sounding words to the same code. In 1994 I posted a routine, shown in code listing 1, to comp.lang.perl which shows both the simplicity of the Soundex algorithm and my Perl style at its worst (or best).

The C# compiler of the Shared Sources Common Language Infrastructure (SSCLI) served as a basis to extend the compiler. Modifications mainly concern the enhancement of C# with an active object concept and a novel communication paradigm based on formal dialogs.
The roots of Active C# can be found in a ROTOR project partially funded by Microsoft Research [Gu]. The concept of active objects and their synchronization comes from Active Oberon [Gk], a successor of the Oberon Language and from the Active Object System [Mu], an internally developed operating system microkernel. This paper presents a consolidation and enhancement of an experimental language concept introduced in the aforementioned ROTOR project.
Active C# is an extension of C# which mainly includes two new technologies: active objects and formal dialogs. Both technologies support the seamless integration of threading into the programming model, with the aim of increased acceptance and use of concurrency in programs. The idea is that programmers do not need to call the underlying threading framework directly anymore but can still add concurrency to their programs simply by making appropriate use of the programming model.

When running benchmarks built on top of these applications, synchronizing swapping display buffers to the monitor vertical retrace can easily prevent the GPU from delivering its true performance. This is likely to be the case as GPUs become increasingly more powerful.
