  • Building a Better Style Guide
  • Why are style guides so frequently created, but so rarely successful? All too often, businesses ask for a style guide as a means to create a common look and feel, in the belief that it will solve usability problems and establish consistency between applications – only to be disappointed in the results. Even if such a style guide is followed carefully, the resulting interfaces may not meet usability goals.. This paper explores strategies for creating a style guide that is more than a simplistic rules book. By making the style guide part of the process, it can be used to promote a shared vision, to help the product meet business and usability requirements for consistency and…it may actually be used. All too many projects to improve the usability of a user interface start with a request to create a style guide. To many user-centered designers, a style guide is the documentation of a design – the end of a design process – not a starting point for usability. And yet, we continue to create them, despite that fact that they may do little to address real usability problems or create a common approach to interaction. This paper describes some tactics and techniques for creating style guides that present and organize the appropriate information in a usable structure. WHAT’S IN A STYLE GUIDE? Style guides can be classified as platform (or language) guide, general design guides, or corporate style guides for a specific application. Although they overlap in many ways, each has a different
  • The Google Library Project: Both Sides of the Story
  • Google’s announcement that it will include in its search database the full text of books from five of the world’s leading research libraries has provoked newspaper editorials, public debates, and two lawsuits. Some of this attention can be attributed to public fascination with any move taken by Google, one of the most successful companies in the digital economy. The sheer scale of the project and its possible benefits for research have also captured the public imagination. Finally, the controversy over copyright issues has been fueled by Google’s willingness to pursue this ambitious effort not with standing the opposition of the publishing industry and organizations representing authors. Much of the press coverage, however, confuses the facts, and the opposing sides often talk past each other without engaging directly. This article will attempt to set forth the facts and review the arguments in a systematic manner. Although both sides have strong legal arguments, the article concludes that the applicable legal precedents support Google’s fair use position The Google Book Search project (formerly the Google Print project) has two facets: the Partner Program (formerly the Publisher Program) and the Library Project. Under the Partner Program, a publisher controlling the rights in a book can authorize Google to scan the full text of the book into Google’s search database. In response to a user query, the user receives bibliographic information concerning the book as well as a link to relevant text. By clicking on the link, the user can
  • Using HTML Help With Microsoft Access
  • Access 97 was released about the same time as HTML Help, so there is zero support for this particular help system from Access 97. For example, you won't be able to use the help functionality of the MsgBox function with HTML Help as it only works with WinHelp. The way to fix this particular problem is to use Sönke Huckfeldt's techniques for creating custom MsgBox and InputBox functions. These techniques can be found in a sample database which is available from the same page you retrieved this article from. You can snag code out of the HTML Help class module to call topics from a menu, command buttons, etc., in Access 97 and 2000. However, there's a problem with this in that Access doesn't use App.Path to derive the path to the application as in the class module code. Microsoft Access MVP Doug Steele suggests using the following to replace App.Path: Download pdf Using HTML Help With Microsoft Access
  • Matching Schemas in Online Communities: A Web 2.0 Approach
  • When integrating data from multiple sources, a key task that online communities often face is to match the schemas of the data sources. Today, such matching often incurs a huge workload that overwhelms the relatively small set of volunteer integrators. In such cases, community members may not even volunteer to be integrators, due to the high workload, and consequently no integration systems can be built. To address this problem, we propose to enlist the multitude of users in the community to help match the schemas, in a Web 2.0 fashion. We discuss the challenges of this approach and provide initial solutions. Finally, we describe an extensive set of experiments on both real-world and synthetic data that demonstrate the utility of the approach. The World-Wide Web is teeming with communities, such as those of movie fans, database researchers, bioinformatists, intelligence analysts, and so on. As such communities proliferate, research on their data management challenges has attracted increasing attention. A key challenge is to integrate data from multiple community-related sources. For example, the community of real estate agents in the Great Lakes region may want to build a system that integrates all real-estate sources in that area. As another example, the database community may want to integrate all information about publications, from DBLP, Google Scholar, and researchers’ homepages, among others. Today, integrating such data within a community is largely shouldered by a relatively small set of volunteers, henceforth called builders. To integrate the data, a key task that builders often face is to establish
