  • Microsoft Compound Document File Format
  • This document contains a description of the binary format of Microsoft Compound Document files. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different storages in the file. This way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the storages are like sub directories. Compound document files work similar to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organised in a hierarchy of storages (like sub directories in a file system). Storages and streams are named. The names of all storages and streams that are direct members of a storage must be different. Names of streams or storages that are members of different storages may be equal. Each compound document file contains a root storage that is the direct or indirect parent of all other storages and streams. Example of a storage/stream hierarchy. The names of all direct members of a storage must be different, but it is possible that two different storages contain a stream named “Stream1”. Download pdf Microsoft Compound Document File Format

  • Mac OS X System Hardening Guidelines for Faculty and Staff Desktops
  • System security is important! If you ask the question, “Who would want to break into this system or why would they want to?,” the how and why of this line of questioning could fill volumes. The “who” could be anyone whether they have legitimate access or not. The “why” is simple: free computing resources, access to data, damaging your system, embarrsing the university. A compromised system can quickly become a liability as it can affect the network or operations on other machines both locally and remotely. System security is a critical issue for the safety of your computer, the data on it, and possibly, the other computers on the network. This process of increasing system security is called system hardening. It is not a one-time event; it is a dynamic and reiterative process. Security holes are discovered daily in operating systems and programs. A secure system today may not be secure tomorrow. Some precautions taken now will save you from problems later. There is no “magic bullet” for securing a system. Every aspect of the system and its maintenance must be considered when securing it. Securing in layers while adding granularity at each level is the best approach. For example, physical security is one layer. An example of adding granularity to physical security is to use badge access to the area where a machine is located. Host security could be considered at the top layer. An example of granularity at this layer is making sure all unnecessary Internet services are off. One
  • Photoshop Elements Quick Guide
  • Photoshop Elements is an image editing program you can use to prepare images for your story. Photoshop allows you to resize and crop photos, fix flaws in the image, and composite images together into a collage. Step 1 – Opening Program and Getting Photos After opening up the software you will see the “welcome” window. Select “Browse for File.” This will open up the Browser window. Use the window in the upper left to navigate to your “rough images” folder. You should now see your rough images in the Browser. Step 2 – Selecting a Photo to Edit To edit a photo, double click on it. A new window will open. This is the Photoshop Elements Editor workspace. Many of the tools you’ll be using are on the far left, in a vertical strip called the Tool Palette. You can find out each tool’s name/function by hovering over the tool with your mouse. Step 3 - Cropping This is what a typical image might look like if you scanned a bunch of pictures at once. Your first job is to separate these photos, edit them, and then save each one as an individual file. To do this, use the rectangular marquee tool, shown below. • Control Abstraction in Parallel Programming Languages
  • Control abstraction is the process by which programmers de ne new control constructs, specifying a statement ordering separately from an implementation of that ordering. We argue that control abstraction can and should play a central role in parallel programming. Control abstraction can be used to build new control constructs for the expression of parallelism. A control construct can have several implementations, representing the varying degrees of parallelism to be exploited on different architectures. Control abstraction also reduces the need for explicit synchronization, since it admits a precise specification of control ow. Using several examples, we illustrate these benefits of control abstraction. We also show that we can efficiently implement a parallel programming language based on control abstraction. We conclude that the enormous benefits and reasonable costs of control abstraction argue for its inclusion in explicitly parallel programming languages. Sequential programming languages use sequencing, repetition, and selection to define a total ordering of statement executions in a program. Parallel programming languages use additional control ow constructs, such as fork, cobegin, or parallel for loops, to introduce a partial order on statement executions, which admits a parallel implementation. Since parallelism is primarily an issue of control ow, the control constructs provided by the language can either help or hinder attempts to express and exploit parallelism. • ISDN Connect Data and Voice Terminal Adapter User Manual
  • The CONNECT is a Terminal Adapter (TA), i.e. the ISDN equivalent of a modem on the PSTN (the analogue telephone network). It allows standard serial data terminals (DTEs), such as personal computers, to be interconnected across the ISDN. The CONNECT is as easy to install and use as a modem and will operate with all existing terminals and communications applications that use the Hayes Standard AT Command Set. In addition, the CONNECT has an analogue interface port that emulates a standard PSTN line. This port allows devices such as a phone, fax, or answer-phone to make calls over your ISDN line. An ISDN connection provides three potential communications channels. Two (’B') Channels provide links running at 64000 bps which give greater throughput than the fastest modem. These ‘B’ Channel links support calls to other ISDN lines or (for voice calls) other PSTN analogue lines. The third link is a lower speed ‘D’ Channel data link, that allows calls to be made to a third party data network such as a public packet switch network. It is possible to have several ISDN devices sharing a single ISDN line through a facility known as the ‘S’ Bus. This allows all the connected devices to contend for the channels and to be separately addressable. The CONNECT range supports all these ISDN services. An ISDN line can support ‘data’ and ‘voice’ calls. In general ‘data’ calls are those made from the CONNECT’s data port. ‘Voice’ calls are calls made from the CONNECT’s analogue port. On
