Using Facebook Pages to reach users: the experiences of University of WolverhamptonSocial networking websites have been steadily gaining popularity over the last few years. A recent OFCOM report (OFCOM, 2008) demonstrated that 22% of adults in the UK had registered with a social networking site (the figure is highest for 16-24 year olds and decreases with age). Facebook is, at present, the most visited social networking site and has over 130 million active users (Facebook, 2008a). This article shares the experiences of University of Wolverhampton’s pilot project into the use of Facebook pages for academic libraries.
During 2007, we noticed that many of our students using PCs in the University of Wolverhampton Learning Centres were regular visitors of Facebook. Each member of the University is given a University e-mail address as well as access to our VLE, but from talking to students, I found that some were choosing to use Facebook as the platform to communicate with their cohort and organise group work.
Academic staff had also started to use Facebook, mainly as a forum for social interaction within their classes but also as a way for students to communicate with them. Some libraries had been using Facebook to set up a profile for the library. However, Facebook regulations permitted this (profiles should be for individuals only) and many were closed. In November 2007, Facebook began Facebook Pages which is designed for businesses and organisations (including libraries) to create a presence. The Windows Mobile deliverable consists of (1) a particular set of Windows CE components, (2) a logo test kit requirements document, (3) a set of light weight middleware applications, and (4) commercialization components, such as drivers and value-added services provided by OEMs and Mobile Operators. Microsoft licenses the Windows Mobile OS to third parties, (generally OEMs and MOs), who commercialize and sell the operating system as part of a device and service offering.
Microsoft entered the embedded device space with Windows CE in 1992, after many years of creating desktop operating systems. Microsoft’s desktop strategy centered on the idea of “platform,” and we brought this idea to the device space. The notion of a vibrant and compelling third party software ecosystem was perceived a necessity for success. That said the small, handheld device is not a PC, and the limitations of the battery powered device, with a small screen, and intermittent and variable network connectivity, make a successful software ecosystem a difficult proposition.

• Web 2.0 has already evolved to Cloud computing.
• Inspite of the notion of a ‘Web only’ processing, the cloud needs a client (as is now apparent from the deployment of a browser like Chrome from Google).
• For a mobile ecosystem, there are two possibilities for a Cloud client; The device or The SIM since both are at the edge of the network(for simplicity we discuss a cellular network only i.e. not Wimax, WiFi etc)
• From a network Operator perspective, the SCWS SIM offers a possibility to be the client for the mobile cloud for reasons that we discuss in this chapter.
• The SCWS SIM technology also offers the possibility of accessing mass market devices.
