Google Apps for Education: ePortfolio and Formative Assessment Workflow
Schools and universities can set up free Google Apps accounts with their own domain name, where they can give all student and faculty acces to a variety of tools, including a GMail account, iGoogle portal, Google Groups for collaboration, and Pages, for creating websites. Each user can also use their GMail account to activate other Google services, such as GoogleDocs. Students and teachers have email accounts, with more than 2 GB of storage per account. Gmail is the web-based or POP-mail account that is also the common ID for other Google applications.

Modern Geographical Information Systems (GIS) [1] provide a service-oriented architecture for interacting with geographical data sets and related maps. Web-based GIS systems are architected around the same principles as more general Web service systems based on SOAP [2], WSDL [3], and REST. Mirroring the World Wide Web Consortium and OASIS Web service standards-making bodies, the Open Geospatial Consortium [5] defines open standards for messages, XML data formats, and access protocols that are specific to the GIS community. In addition to OGC-based services, there are many companies (such as ESRI and AutoDesk) that provide proprietary, commercial solutions. Services from these various providers are not normally interoperable.

There is a known issue in the Analysis ToolPak of Microsoft Excel 2007. The Regression tool in the Analysis ToolPak in Excel 2007 does not display residual and line fit plots correctly. For more information on this problem please see: http://itinfo.mit.edu/article.php?id=8494

This issue has been documented to Microsoft and a hotfix is currently being developed for release by the end of September 2007. In the meantime, a work around has been implemented for users who need to use the Regression Tool.

The Microsoft Office 2007 suite utilizes a new file format known as Open XML. This new format introduces an “x” at the end of the file extension (see Figure 1) and will affect compatibility between the versions for the following programs: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that allows you to manage numerical data. Excel spreadsheets are made up of columns that are named by letters, and rows that are indicated by numbers. Rows and columns can be labeled. The intersections of rows and columns are called cells. Every unique piece of data will be placed in a cell. Protecting Microsoft Exchange

Though the technological reasons to protect Exchange systems may be self evident, there are quantifiable fiscal reasons to protect these messaging systems as well. The dollar value of any given data-set may be difficult to calculate, but the cost-savings of avoiding even a single Exchange outage can easily be determined. In most organizations, there are at the very least one or two subsets of end-users who cannot continue to work without these systems functioning. Even if these groups might not regularly produce revenue in the form of direct sales or billable engagements, salaries, benefits and fixed costs still accrue during an outage.
