  • How to Create a Reference Image
  • Usually, when you’re modeling something in Maya, you have a rough idea of what it should be like. However, what if you have actual images of the object you are modeling and want to be as accurate as possible? This is usually the case when you create a model from scratch. This is a very basic and important modeling skill to have. In this tutorial, I will teach you how to set up a basic reference plane to model your, for lack of better words, model after. Settings Remember to always check your settings before starting any new Maya file! In this tutorial, I used FEET for the linear option, DEGREES for the angle option, and NTSC 30fps for the time option. Creating Reference Planes Starting in the top bar, go to CREATE > POLYGON PRIMITIVES > PLANE > OPTION BOX. Or alternatively, you can click on the PLANE icon in the POLYGONS shelf tab. • Specifying, Discovering, and Monitoring Service Flows: Making Web Services Process-Aware
  • Web services, an emerging paradigm for architecting and implementing business collaborations within and across organizational boundaries, are currently of interest to both software vendors and scientists. In this paradigm, the functionality provided by business applications is encapsulated within web services: software components described at a semantic level, which can be invoked by application programs or by other services through a stack of Internet standards including HTTP, XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI [3,18]. Once deployed, web services provided by various organizations can be inter-connected in order to implement business collaborations, leading to composite web services. Today workflow management systems are readily available [6,49,59] and workflow technology is hidden in many applications, e.g., ERP, CRM, and PDM systems. However, their application is still limited to specific industries such as banking and insurance. Since 2000 there has been a growing interest in web services. This resulted in a stack of Internet standards (HTTP, XML, SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI) which needed to be complemented by a process layer. Several vendors proposed competing languages, e.g., IBM proposed WSFL (Web Services Flow Language) [48] building on FlowMark/MQSeries and Microsoft proposed XLANG (Web Services for Business Process Design) [71] building on Biztalk. BPEL [16] emerged as a compromise between both languages. The Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS, or BPEL for short) has become the de-facto standard for implementing processes based on web services [16]. Systems such as Oracle BPEL Process Manager, IBM WebSphere Application Server Enterprise, IBM WebSphere Studio Application Developer Integration Edition, and Microsoft BizTalk

  • WYSIWYG Development of Data Driven Web Applications
  • An emerging trend in Social Networking sites and Web portals is the opening up of their APIs to external application develop- ers. For example, the Facebook Platform, Google Gadgets and Yahoo! Widgets allow developers to design their own applications, which can then can be integrated with the platform and shared with other users. However, current APIs are targeted towards develop- ers with programming expertise and database knowledge; they are not accessible to a large class of users who do not have a programming/database background, but would nevertheless like to create new applications. To address this need, we have developed the AppForge system, which provides a WYSIWYG application development platform. Users can graphically specify the components of webpages inside a Web browser, and the corresponding database schema and application logic will be automatically generated on the fly by the system. The WYSIWYG interface gives instantaneous feedback on what users have created and allows them to run, test and continuously refine their applications. AppForge has been used to create prototype versions of a variety of applications such as an event planning system, a recruiting system, an item trading system and an online course management system. We have also conducted a small and preliminary user study to identify and fix some of the usability aspects of AppForge. As the world moves towards Web 2.0, there is an increasing need to leverage webpages as computing platforms that can enable users to build their own applications. For example, in Facebook and Yahoo! Groups, different groups of users
  • Virtools Tutorial: How to Setup 2D and 3D Sound in Your Scene
  • This tutorial shows how to playback and how to script sounds inside a virtual space. We will use the Wav and Mp3 sounds files included in the following sound folder. Please note that wav files will be used for looping a short and repetitive sound for example the rain. The mp3 compression allows to play longer sound files for example a song or background music. A basic sound file can be saved in your Resource folder and imported into Virtools by drag and drop like the other assets. The sound file is placed in Level Manager > sound > Rain.wav. Go to Level Manager > sounds > Rain, Right.click on Rain.wav. In the Sound Setup , you can playback the sound, Step 1, or you can tweak Pitch, Gain, Pan, the sound parameters. These parameters are interactive BB in Virtools. Part 1 - Simple 2D Sound Playback In some cases, several flat background sounds or 2D sounds are all what you need. Sound file formats inside the Level Manager > sound folder can be played with the Wave Player BB. Sound from the Wave Player can be looped and turned on and off. • Can C# Replace Java in CS1 and CS2?
  • Microsoft has developed a language called C# (—see sharp“) that it claims will allow programmers to —quickly and easily build solutions“ for its new.NET platform [3]. The language has much in common with Java, particularly in those features emphasized in CS1 and CS2 courses. It also includes some of the desirable features of C++ that are missing from Java as well as some new features not available in either language. This paper explores the pros and cons of teaching CS1 and CS2 using C# instead of Java and concludes with a discussion of the author‘s plans for teaching such a course in the fall of 2002. Bill Gates has referred to the .NET technologies as —the breakthrough tools that will allow developers to write the next generation of applications“ [2]. He might be spouting marketing hype, but the release of .NET clearly constitutes a watershed for the company. Many schools will choose to ignore what Microsoft does, but others will find the Microsoft connection appealing. Few departments would sacrifice the quality of instruction just to teach .practical. tools that are currently used in industry. But if C# turns out to be as useful as Java in teaching the CS curriculum, some schools will choose C# instead of Java because of the particular interests of their students, their school or their community. There has been a shift away from C++ in computer science education in recent years. The reasons for this shift were documented in a report from an ad-hoc committee formed by the
