  • Clay Render with Wires
  • In this tutorial, you will learn how to render out any object with a clay material, and how to add wireframe. For this tutorial you will need a novice to intermediate knowledge about 3DS Max, or your preferred 3d application. In this tutorial, I will be using 3DS Max 9, so if you have an older version or if you are using a different 3d application, your button configuration maybe slightly different. To begin, open 3D Max or your preferred 3D application. Insert your model or any object that you wish to give this effect to. For this tutorial, I will use a simple primitive, a sphere. Once you have the object that you wish to apply the effect to in the scene, open your Material Editor by pushing the keyboard shortcut or "Hotkey" M, or click on the four spheres in the main toolbar. Once you have the Material Editor open, select the Diffuse color, and then change it to a light brown color. Double click the color in the Diffuse slot. The Color Selector : Diffuse Color Menu with pop up. Now, choose a nice light brown color. I used R: 220; G: 205; B: 165. Download pdf Clay Render with Wires

  • Mac OS X System Hardening Guidelines for Faculty and Staff Desktops
  • System security is important! If you ask the question, “Who would want to break into this system or why would they want to?,” the how and why of this line of questioning could fill volumes. The “who” could be anyone whether they have legitimate access or not. The “why” is simple: free computing resources, access to data, damaging your system, embarrsing the university. A compromised system can quickly become a liability as it can affect the network or operations on other machines both locally and remotely. System security is a critical issue for the safety of your computer, the data on it, and possibly, the other computers on the network. This process of increasing system security is called system hardening. It is not a one-time event; it is a dynamic and reiterative process. Security holes are discovered daily in operating systems and programs. A secure system today may not be secure tomorrow. Some precautions taken now will save you from problems later. There is no “magic bullet” for securing a system. Every aspect of the system and its maintenance must be considered when securing it. Securing in layers while adding granularity at each level is the best approach. For example, physical security is one layer. An example of adding granularity to physical security is to use badge access to the area where a machine is located. Host security could be considered at the top layer. An example of granularity at this layer is making sure all unnecessary Internet services are off. One

  • Mapping Mashups
  • As part of a large undergraduate history course he teaches about World War II, Dr. Martinez developed a mapping mashup that he introduces to the 150 students at the beginning of the semester. The mashup, which works with Google maps, represents major events leading up to and during the war. Fundamentally, it’s a map, he explains, showing them on a projection screen that it works very much like the online mapping tools students regularly use. The map covers virtually the entire globe, and users can move around the world, zooming in and out, showing the area of search as a map, satellite images, or satellite images with maps, dates, and events superimposed. When students zoom in on Europe, they see flags scattered around the continent and into Asia. Similar maps dot Japan, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific. When clicked, each flag opens a pop-up box that names the location, explains what happened there and when, and shows a photograph of that site at or close to the date in question. Flags correspond to important battles, political events, treaties that were signed, and cities such as Vichy, the wartime capital of France. The text in the box also includes links to articles that talk in depth about what took place in each location and the significance of that event. Students can zoom in to particular locations and see satellite images of what the place looks like today. They can also get an idea about the terrain where soldiers fought and died. During
