For many applications of gawk to TCP/IP networking, we hope that this is enough. For more advanced tasks, you will need deeper background, and it may be necessary to switch to lower-level programming in C or C++.
There are two real-life models for the way computers send messages to each other over a network. While the analogies are not perfect, they are close enough to convey the major concepts. These two models are the phone system (reliable byte-stream communications), and the postal system (best-effort datagrams).
Reliable Byte-streams (Phone Calls)
When you make a phone call, the following steps occur:
1. You dial a number.
2. The phone system connects to the called party, telling them there is an incoming call. (Their phone rings.)
3. The other party answers the call, or, in the case of a computer network, refuses to answer the call.
4. Assuming the other party answers, the connection between you is now a duplex (two-way), reliable (no data lost), sequenced (data comes out in the order sent) data stream.
5. You and your friend may now talk freely, with the phone system moving the data (your voices) from one end to the other. From your point of view, you have a direct end-to-end connection with the person on the other end.
The same steps occur in a duplex reliable computer networking connection. There is considerably more overhead in setting up the communications, but once it’s done, data moves in both directions, reliably, in sequence.
Download pdfInstalling PHP under WindowsNot a Linux fan? Looking for a hassle?free way of setting up a PHP environment on your Windows box? Read as Matthew guides us through the process of installing Apache, MySQL and PHP on a Windows based machine, otherwise known as WAMP.
This article is geared towards people who want to code and test their own, or other people's, php scripts on their Windows box. No advanced technical knowledge is assumed. This tutorial is unsuitable for advanced users. Why Apache and MySQL? Because they are available for free, quite easy to use and reliable. Why windows? Because there are many installation guides written for the Linux user, but Windows generally gets overlooked. And getting it all to work can be a real daunting task.
What is Apache?
Apache is our web server of choice; it’s free, reliable and well supported. In fact, as of October 2003 apache web servers had a market of over 67%, compared to their nearest rival Microsoft’s ISS having under 25% (http://news.netcraft.com/) So its not just a few people who think Apache is a good thing! A web server basically serves web pages from the server to the client browser. For every page you see when connecting to the internet, somewhere there is a network server sending it to you. The pages are usually sent in html format, along with images and other media.
What is MySQL?
[From MySQL.com] ‘MySQL is the world's most popular open source database, recognized for its speed and reliability.’ A Database is a place for youLMS 2.0: how to Select an advanced Learning SystemMigrating to a new learning management system (LMS) has been likened to breaking into faculty classrooms, throwing their course materials into a moving van, and dumping them in a heap at the new location – leaving the faculty to sort and reorganize their course content long after IT support has driven off. This painful process can be averted by assessing faculty needs and expectations, and selecting a solution that supports seamless content migration and intuitive course management. That may be easier said than done. The $350 million market for LMSs is populated by more than 140 vendors whose mission is to support best practices in the preferred pedagogical approach of colleges and universities.
The proliferation of academic computing solutions has cluttered the market with applications that are bloated with extraneous features. Too often, institutions are lured into the trap of deploying an LMS that is the current favorite, only to realize that these applications are too unwieldy and burdensome to use. In fact, nearly 24 percent of schools with LMS deployments experience buyers’ remorse and would change systems if they could, according to a 2007 study by Bershin and Associates.
Common purchasing mistakes include failing to define system requirements, focusing on price rather than value, overlooking interoperability and scalability, and selecting customization instead of configuration. In addition, vendor lock-in so constrains many institutions that they believe they can’t switch to a new vendor without substantial real or perceived costs.
At a price tag upwards of $35 per user to purchase and nearly twice2002 Pontiac Firebird Owner’s Manual PDFMany people read their owner’s manual from beginning to end when they first receive their new vehicle. If you do this, it will help you learn about the features and control for your vehicle. In this manual, you’ll find that pictures and words work together to explain things quickly. Safety Warning and Symbols You will find a number of safety cautions in this book. We use a box and the word CAUTION to tell you about things that could hurt you if you were to ignore the warning. In the caution area, we tell you what the hazard is. Then we tell you what to do to help avoid or reduce the hazards.
Please read these cautions. If you don’t, you or others could be hurt. You will also find a circle with a slash through it in this book. This safety symbols means “Don’t” “Don’t do this” or “Don’t let this happen”.

Download Unix Simplified Installation GuideIllustrated Roadmap for Macintosh GQMac WebThis Illustrated Roadmap was designed to help the Computer Coordinator customize GradeQuick for their school and for teachers to make further customizations that will affect only their files. The Illustrated Roadmap will also assist teachers through various GradeQuick features and will serve as an easy reference to guide teachers through the school year using GradeQuick.
Customizing Your Gradebook
Successful use of GradeQuick begins with setting GradeQuick features to correspond with your school/district policies or your personal user preferences. Technology coordinators can set global settings for all teachers to use and then allow teachers to further establish their own settings. All features can be set globally by the GradeQuick administrator and then further customized by the individual teachers or the feature can be restricted with the Jackson Software supplemental program called SiteManager. More information on global settings can be found in the Site License notebook.
Please consider setting the following GradeQuick features prior to entering grades in GradeQuick. Keep in mind that as a teacher your technology coordinator/GradeQuick administrator may have already set some of these settings for your use.
GradeScale
Numeric Grades
Grading Symbols
Score Footnotes
Student Data Field Names
Attendance Start Dates
Attendance Codes
Vacation Dates
Weighting
Grading Preferences
After you have customized your chosen features in one gradebook be sure to follow the directions on the last page of this section to copy the features to your other gradebooks.

Download pdf Tie IBM OmniFind Yahoo! Edition into Web applicationsSQLrand: Preventing SQL Injection AttacksWe present a practical protection mechanism against SQL injection attacks. Such attacks target databases that are accessible through a web front-end, and take advantage of flaws in the input validation logic of Web components such as CGI scripts. We apply the concept of instruction-set randomization to SQL, creating instances of the language that are unpredictable to the attacker. Queries injected by the attacker will be caught and terminated by the database parser. We show how to use this technique with the MySQL database using an intermediary proxy that translates the random SQL to its standard language. Our mechanism imposes negligible performance overhead to query processing and can be easily retrofitted to existing systems.
The intuition behind such attacks is that pre-defined logical expressions within a pre-defined query can be altered simply by injecting operations that always result in true or false statements. This injection typically occurs through a web form and associated CGI script that does not perform appropriate input validation. These types of injections are not limited strictly to character fields. Similar alterations to the “where” and “having” SQL clauses have been exposed, when the application does not restrict numeric data for numeric fields.
Standard SQL error messages returned by a database can also assist the attacker. In situations where the attacker has no knowledge of the underlying SQL query or the contributing tables, forcing an exception may reveal more details about the table or its field names and types. This technique has been shown to be quite effective in practice.
