  • EJB's 101 Damnations
  • This is the tale of 101 Damnations. Sadly, it's no Disney story - in fact it's more likely to have been pulled from the pages of the Brothers Grimm. Whilst writing the EJB modules for our JGenerator product, we started punting an email back and forth containing all the issues we had with EJB. And there were many. Before we knew it we ended up with 101 howlers. In this article we present an edited version of the email. It isn't a complete list and there may be some overlapping issues. If there is enough interest we will turn it into a more formal analysis. Before you flame us for chasing after your sacred cow with a big stick, all three of us have belonged to the "pro-Java" lobby since Java was in its first beta, and we still do. We have evangelised Java at every company we have worked at. However, EJB just presents so much that is wrong and messed up that we felt we had to speak out. The 101 issues are divided into the following categories: • Conceptual • Design • Development • Deployment • Runtime • Knock-On Effects And finally there's a conclusion, containing some heartfelt suggestions for improving the EJB spec. We want Java and J2EE to succeed. We want it to remain the platform for developing server-side applications. We just hope that somebody at Sun is paying attention… Download pdf EJB's 101 Damnations
  • Grass Effect Tutorial
  • Hi. In this tutorial I gonna show Ya sum stuff about Maya PaintFX. There are various possibilities to use PaintFX. You can paint: attributes, expressions, scripts. You can also make your own script or expression and paint it on. In this tutorial I'll focus on making grass, adding sum dynamics and animating it. So let's get started. Open Maya and create NewScene. I use the HotBox coz this is the best solution for me to navigating through Maya interface. You can use standard menu sets of course if you more like it :) Tips: To open up -show- the HotBox press and hold down the Space button on your Next we need to create sum geometry to paint on it, coz PaintFX will be created on curves on surface. Create NurbsPlane. Scale it a little bit so ya get sumthin' like that. There are few diffrent ways to create PaintFX. Ya can paint direct on surface using Brush tool, then brush tool will create curve on surface or you can create curve on surface and attach brush to curve. In this tut I choose second way. To make surface live, select it and click big red magnet on status line. Download pdf Grass Effect Tutorial

  • The A/UX Web Server Deployment Guide A SnakeOil Labs White Paper
  • If you’re one of the four, five, maybe even six people out there on the Internet who want to set up an A/UX web server, then this guide is for you. To make things simpler, this document follows a few standard conventions. Text in Courier is reserved for terminal sessions. This provides a sample walkthrough of commands to type and their usual responses. For example: A larger courier font is used to denote relevant commands mid-sentence, such as newconfig, in order to separate the command from the rest of the text. File and path names, such as /etc/inittab, are in bold. Individual references to filenames without paths like inittab aren’t. Note: The famous Mac Bomb symbol is used to denote a tip or note. Small notes like these provide hints and tips as well as insight drawn from bitter experience. Make sure you read them! One small point; there are many instances where command lines are preceded by either a # or $ symbol. The # refers to the root user and the $ symbol refers to a regular user. In either case, don’t type the symbol. To make matters even more confusing, most of the configuration files used in this guide use leading # symbols to define comments. It’s confusing but it’s the UNIX convention, not ours. Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it. Credit Where Credit’s Due This guide simply wouldn’t exist without the prior work of many others. In particular, I’d like to thank Scott from aux-penelope for letting me use his screenshots
