With the evolution of wireless technology such as mobile phones, the idea to bring these two technologies together gives a new dimension to P2P communication, collaboration and resource sharing.
This master thesis explores the domain of Mobile Peer-to-Peer networking and proposes a Peer-to-Peer System with Wireless Devices. The system is based on an open, protocol-based P2P platform called JXTA. It allows any connected device on the network ranging from sensors and cell phones to personal computers and servers to communicate and collaborate in a Peer-to-Peer manner. It is platform and network independent and designed to be implemented on any networking device.
JXTA for J2ME (JXME) is a lightweight version of JXTA that gives P2P functionality to constrained wireless devices. The technology, which is open source, is under development by the JXTA community, and this thesis focuses on the development of JXME for the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC).
The system proposed uses the JXME API, but suggests a more specific approach to implement different Peer operations such as Peer discovery, resource advertising and file transfer. Because of the limitations of wireless devices, one or more powerful Peers need to participate in the network as Proxy Services. This gives both the advantages of a fixed P2P network and the mobility of a wireless device.
The prototype developed demonstrates the P2P system with simple collaboration and file sharing. Getting started
There are several things you need to do in order to use e-mail.
- You need to create an Internet setup using the Newton Internet Enabler (NIE) [5] so that your Newton device can communicate with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or intranet.
- If you’re using a modem, you need to set your modem preferences.
- You need to set up SimpleMail [8]. Once these steps are done, you should be able to use e-mail on your Newton device.
Note
Because SimpleMail uses the Newton Internet Enabler, it will only work with Newton 2.x devices. It will not work on the Original MessagePad (OMP), MP100, MP110 or early models of the MP120 which use Newton 1.x.x
Since then Paul Guyot has created a 2.1 (710031) update for the English MP2000 and MP2100 that fixes a Dates/Find bug.
The six-digit number tells you what type of Newton device the system update applies to, and when it was built. See the Newton FAQ: Newton OS [3] for a full description of the numbering system.
Newton Internet Enabler
Your Newton must be Internet Enabled before you can use SimpleMail. You need to install Apple’s Newton Internet Enabler (NIE) [5], of which there are two versions.

To help usher in this new era, O’Reilly Media and CMP launched a conference that showcased the innovators who were driving it. When O’Reilly’s Dale Dougherty came up with the term “Web 2.0”during a brainstorming session, we knew we had the name for the conference. What we didn’t know was that the industry would embrace the Web 2.0 meme and that it would come to represent the new Web.
Web 2.0 is much more than just pasting a new user interface onto an old application. It’s a way of thinking, a new perspective on the entire business of software—from concept through delivery, from marketing through support. Web 2.0 thrives on network effects: databases that get richer the more people interact with them, applications that are smarter the more people use them, marketing that is driven by user stories and experiences, and applications that interact with each other to form a broader computing platform.
The trend toward networked applications is accelerating. While Web 2.0 has initially taken hold in consumer-facing applications, the infrastructure required to build these applications, and the scale at which they are operating, means that, much as PCs took over from mainframes in a classic demonstration of Clayton Christensen’s “innovator’s dilemma” hypothesis, web applications can and will move into the enterprise space.
Two years ago we launchedStatic Mesh PipelineCreating art in a 3D modeling package such as Max or Maya and then trying to get it to work in the Unreal Editor can sometimes be quite a feat, especially if you’ve never done it before. Hopefully this process will provide a basic understanding of the art pipeline for Unreal Ed and answer any questions you may have about getting your static meshes from the 3D package of your choice into the Unreal Editor and into your Mod.
First off, what is a static mesh? In Unreal Ed, a static mesh is a piece of geometry that does not have any animations. This is not to say it won’t move in game. A few examples of static meshes would be the decorative piping you see running along walls or ceilings, a tree stump, or even an elevator lift that moves once you step on it. In the case of the elevator lift, it is animated using Matinee, Unreal’s key frame animation system, not an external 3D package such as Max or Maya. For more examples of static meshes, simply hop into Unreal Ed, open up your favorite package and look at the static meshes in there.
Note: This tutorial is being created using Maya 2008 as the 3D package of choice. There are slight differences and peculiarities in how you export models from the various 3D packages.
