  • ActionScript Coding Standards Tutorial
  • Macromedia Flash applications have generally been built without regard to particular standards or guidelines. While this flexibility allows for a wide variety of solutions to a problem, it also makes it difficult for anyone other than the author of an application to understand the code. Even the author may have difficulty reading his or her own code after it is written. If a developer cannot understand the code in an application, it will not be easy to debug the code, make changes, or reuse the application. This documents outlines a system of best practices specifically designed for coding with ActionScript and building applications with Macromedia Flash. Applications that use these guidelines should be more efficient and understandable-and the underlying ActionScript code will be easy to debug and reuse. • Interactive 3D models – From 3ds max to VRML PDF
  • Producing 3D interactive models is becoming a greater challenge every day. Choosing the right tool to handle the modelling process is essential if the final product is to be a VRML world, which can satisfy the user’s desire for both interactivity and realism. 3ds max offers a potentially excellent development environment for creating high quality 3D models. This paper discusses how the tools and techniques available within 3ds max can be harnessed to produce complex interactive models, which are viewable with a VRML browser. Keywords: VRML, Virtual Reality, interactivity, 3ds max, modelling, 3D models 1. Introduction Chapters 1.1 and 1.2 set out the scope and motivation for this paper. Chapter 1.3 describes the working platform, testing platform and the software packages used in our projects. Chapter 2 provides a brief overview of 3ds max modelling software and chapter 3 offers an overview of VRML language. Chapter 4 gives a short description of what interactivity in virtual worlds means and considers the user expectations of interactivity. Download Interactive 3D models – From 3ds max to VRML PDF
  • MySQL Support White Paper
  • MySQL is a Relational Database Management System. A relational database adds speed and flexibility, by storing data in separate tables rather than putting all the data in one area. These tables are linked by defined relations making it possible to combine data fromseveral tables upon request. Using a RDMS means it is possible to add, access, and process the data stored in your database. ‘SQL’ stands for "Structured Query Language" - the most common standardised language used to access databases. MySQL is Open Source software and is freely available at www.mysql.com. Open Source software means that the source code can easily be manipulated and modified by anyone. It is very simple to use. Why use MySQL? MySQL is very fast, reliable, and easy to use. MySQL also has a very practical set of features developed in close cooperation with its users. It is also Open Source and therefore freely accessible. MySQL is used to access databases on the internet due to its connectivity, speed and security. It was originally developed to manage large databases at a much faster speed than the solutions that previously existed. MySQL has for several years, been thriving in the challenging areas of production. Download pdf MySQL Support White Paper

  • Chart FX Shines for Silverlight TM Today
  • Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2008 introduces a whole new set of .NET technologies that will revolutionize, once again, the way you develop smart client and web-based applications; the most notable being LINQ, WPF and, of course, Silverlight. For most of us working in and around web application development in the business world, Silverlight is a big step forward; especially if you consider that it provides clean coding practices with extensible languages (e.g. XAML and C#). It also provides some of Visual Studio’s rich programming model that we have become accustomed to and can no longer live without; such as class libraries, debugging capabilities and IntelliSense among many others. Silverlight (especially from 1.1 onwards) can be used by .NET developers to create cross platform browser-based content with genuinely interactive client-side functionality that doesn't rely on a sticky tape of AJAX. Microsoft has been working diligently with third party vendors, like Software FX, to open Silverlight to the vast goodwill that Microsoft partners have to offer. Unfortunately, much of this effort has not been exposed yet as most vendors continue their Silverlight and Visual Studio 2008 integration efforts. At Software FX, we couldn’t wait to put our hands on Silverlight and try to build a Chart FX version that you could work with today. In the end, we were able to implement a Silverlight solution based on Chart FX 7 which will allow you to take advantage of tomorrow’s technology with tools you are familiar with today. In addition, this paper will help you understand

  • It is updated version that replaces Appendix C in the 2 nd edition (16 May 2004) of Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL by Hugh E. Williams and David Lane. This appendix is copyright O’Reilly Media Inc. We thank Jeanne Pickering, Scott Brown, Matt Starks, and Bill Griffiths for feedback, errata, and suggestions. This appendix is a guide to installing the software used in the book on an Apple MacIntosh OS X platform. The instructions are designed for administrators, so you’ll need to be able to login as the root user. The instructions were written and tested on Mac OS X Panther (Version 10.3.1) with kernel version Darwin 7.0.0. After showing you how to get PHP, Apache, and MySQL running, we then present a short guide to downloading and installing the PHP script and database examples used in this book. We also show you how to set up tools that are needed by examples in the book but aren’t included in the default Apache, PHP, and MySQL installations. The Mac OS X environment, PHP, Apache, MySQL, and our code examples can all change over time. This means that this guide may not work perfectly when you use it.
