The SAP Lock Concept (BC-CST-EQ) TutorialThe SAP System is equipped with a special lock mechanism that synchronizes access to data on the database. The purpose of the lock mechanism is to prevent two transactions from changing the same data on the database simultaneously. Implementation Considerations Locks are defined generically as “lock objects” in the Data Dictionary. A lock request is a specific instance of a lock object and locks a certain database object, such as a correction or a table entry. Lock entries are usually set and deleted automatically when user programs access a data object and release it again.
Integration The SAP lock mechanism is closely related to the update mechanism in R/3 [Extern]. A description of handling lock objects is provided in the ABAP Dictionary Documentation under Lock Objects [Extern]. The ABAP documentation explains the key elements of the lock concept with regard to programming ABAP transactions in the section entitled The R/3 Lock Concept

After much research and testing, I believe that I have been able to determine the probable cause of these problems and a potential fix.
Microsoft Word is highly customizable program. The problem arises when changes are made to the default printer settings without the user knowing this has happened. This could be interpreted as a “corruption”, but if used as designed, it really is a feature. To better understand how to avoid this problem, users need to better understand one of the basic processes of the MS Word program. Word maintains a file called normal.dot. This is a template file – the basic pattern that Word uses every time that it starts a new blank document. This file can be customized if, for example, users always print to non-standard size paper or wanted specific margins or tabs.
The “problem” appears to be caused by changes being made to this normal.dot template. My guess is that there are one or more documents “floating around” where the template has been changed and the current user inadvertently updates their own normal.dot to match.

The best example of such solutions is Akamai [1], which runs several tens of thousands of servers all over the world. In recent years, a new paradigm for Content Distribution has emerged based on a fully distributed architecture where commodity PCs are used to form a cooperative network and share their resources (storage, CPU, bandwidth).
Cooperative content distribution solutions are inherently self scalable, in that the bandwidth capacity of the system increases as more nodes arrive: each new node requests service from, and, at the same time, provides service to other nodes. Because each new node contributes resources, the capacity of the system grows as the demand increases, resulting in limitless system scalability. With cooperation, the source of the file, i.e. the server, does not need to increase its resources to accommodate the larger user population; this, also, provides resilience
