  • SQLrand: Preventing SQL Injection Attacks
  • We present a practical protection mechanism against SQL injection attacks. Such attacks target databases that are accessible through a web front-end, and take advantage of flaws in the input validation logic of Web components such as CGI scripts. We apply the concept of instruction-set randomization to SQL, creating instances of the language that are unpredictable to the attacker. Queries injected by the attacker will be caught and terminated by the database parser. We show how to use this technique with the MySQL database using an intermediary proxy that translates the random SQL to its standard language. Our mechanism imposes negligible performance overhead to query processing and can be easily retrofitted to existing systems. The intuition behind such attacks is that pre-defined logical expressions within a pre-defined query can be altered simply by injecting operations that always result in true or false statements. This injection typically occurs through a web form and associated CGI script that does not perform appropriate input validation. These types of injections are not limited strictly to character fields. Similar alterations to the “where” and “having” SQL clauses have been exposed, when the application does not restrict numeric data for numeric fields. Standard SQL error messages returned by a database can also assist the attacker. In situations where the attacker has no knowledge of the underlying SQL query or the contributing tables, forcing an exception may reveal more details about the table or its field names and types. This technique has been shown to be quite effective in practice. One

  • Guidelines for Using External Web 2.0 Services
  • Traditionally, the World Wide Web has been a one-way, publisher to reader, medium. The distinguishing feature of Web 2.0 is that it is a bidirectional medium, where content (text, image, audio or video) is contributed by people who interact with the website as well as people and organizations who manage the site – in other words, it is the “read/write web”. There are many companies on the Internet offering attractive and useful applications services based on the Web 2.0 paradigm, including blogs, wikis, office systems, social bookmarking etc – and of course there are virtual worlds such as Second Life which transcend the definition of “Web 2.0”. These are increasingly being adopted by computer users within the University, for administrative, teaching, learning and research purposes. This document offers guidance to staff within the University on some of the issues which need to be considered before using such services for University purposes. The document is intended to be helpful for all staff, including researchers, teaching staff and support staff. Note, however, that it focuses on issues specific to using external Web 2.0 services – issues which are common to Web 2.0 services regardless of whether they are internally or externally hosted are not specifically addressed. The University’s use of Web 2.0 services is developing quickly, and the services themselves are changing and expanding even more rapidly. It is inevitable that the information herein will be far from a complete or comprehensive guide to the issues. You should therefore seek other relevant advice and use

  • Cleaning the MAF sensor (Diesel engines only)
  • The first step is to locate the MAF sensor. Its position is on the air intake system, after the air filter box. The second step is to unplug the connector on the MAF sensor. It has a clip that holds it firmly in place, so you need to push the clip with your finger to release it. (red arrow) Then just pull the plug off. The third step is to unscrew the two torx security screws. To do that, you will need a trox screwdriver T20. After the screws are out, gently pull the sensor out of his casing. After you have done the above, you will have this on your table. The next step is the cleaning. For that you will need a 3 or 4 cotton sticks and some alcohol. *Use clear alcohol or start spray – do not use any spray or liquid that is oily or greasy. Get the cotton sticks mentioned above and flatten them. So they look like this. *If you don’t do that, they will not fit in the openings. Download pdf Cleaning the MAF sensor (Diesel engines only)
