  • SEMANTIC AND PERCEPTUAL MANAGEMENT OF SOUND EFFECTS IN PRODUCTION
  • Main professional sound effects (SFX) providers offer their collections using... methods in a commercial sound effect management system. INTRODUCTION SEMANTIC AND PERCEPTUAL MANAGEMENT OF SOUND EFFECTS IN PRODUCTION SYSTEMS P. Cano, M. Koppenberger, S. Le Groux, J. Ricard and N. Wack Univeitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain ABSTRACT Main professional sound effects (SFX) provide offer their collectio using standard text-retrieval technologies. SFX cataloging is an error-prone and labor couming task. The vagueness of the query specification, normally one or two words, together with the ambiguity and informality of natural languages affects the quality of the search: Some relevant sounds are not retrieved and some irrelevant ones are presented to the user. The use of ontologies alleviates some of the ambiguity problems inherent to natural languages, yet they pose othe. It is very complicated to devise and maintain an ontology that account for the level of detail needed Download
  • A New Paradigm in Data Intensive Computing: Stork and the Data-Aware Schedulers
  • The unbounded increase in the computation and data requirements of scientific applications has necessitated the use of widely distributed compute and storage resources to meet the demand. In a widely distributed environment, data is no more locally accessible and has thus to be remotely retrieved and stored. Efficient and reliable access to data sources and archiving destinations in such an environment brings new challenges. Placing data on temporary local storage devices offers many advantages, but such “data placements” also require careful management of storage resources and data movement, i.e. allocating storage space, staging-in of input data, staging-out of generated data, and de-allocation of local storage after the data is safely stored at the destination. Traditional systems closely couple data placement and computation, and consider data placement as a side effect of computation. Data placement is either embedded in the computation and causes the computation to delay, or performed as simple scripts which do not have the privileges of a job. The insufficiency of the traditional systems and existing CPU-oriented schedulers in dealing with the complex data handling problem has yielded a new emerging era: the data-aware schedulers. One of the first examples of such schedulers is the Stork data placement scheduler. In this paper, we will discuss the limitations of the traditional schedulers in handling the challenging data scheduling problem of large scale distributed applications; give our vision for the new paradigm in data-intensive scheduling; and elaborate on our case study: the Stork data placement scheduler. • BMW’s 3-Series: Developing a Tradition Manual
  • BMW’s philosophy is to build driving machines that respond faithfully and enjoyably to their driver’s commands while also providing the safety, practicality, style, quality, reliability, and durability that help make long-term ownership a rewarding experience. It was BMW’s policy to develop new platforms for its series of cars every 7 to 8 years. New platforms were not simply modifications, but completely new structures. According to Friedrich Nitschke, manager for the BMW 3 series development project, there were three goals for the new 3 series platform that came to market in the 1999 model year. First, it was to generate the highest level of customer satisfaction in its class. Second, it was to utilize the best processes available within BMW. Third, it was to generate the most profit of any BMW series. Source: www.auburn.edu Download PDF of BMW’s 3-Series: Developing a Tradition Manual
  • Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh User's Guide
  • A computer virus is a parasitic program written intentionally to alter the way your computer operates without your permission or knowledge. A virus attaches copies of itself to other files and, when activated, may damage files, cause erratic system behavior, or display messages. Computer viruses infect System files, or files stored in the System folder that the Macintosh computer uses to start up and documents created by programs with macro capabilities. Mac OS System files include kernel extensions (programs that load into memory when a Macintosh computer is started), and programs like those in Microsoft Office. Some computer viruses are programmed specifically to corrupt programs, delete files, or erase your disk. Macro viruses spread quickly Macros are simple programs that are used to do things such as automate repetitive tasks in a document or make calculations in a spreadsheet. Macros are written in files created by such programs as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Macro viruses are malicious macro programs that are designed to replicate themselves from file to file and can often destroy or change data. Macro viruses can be transferred across platforms and spread whenever you open an infected file. Trojan horses hide their true purposes Trojan horses are programs that appear to serve some useful purpose or provide entertainment, which encourages you to run them. But the program also serves a covert purpose, which may be to damage files or place a virus on your computer. A Trojan horse is not a virus because it does not replicate and spread like a virus.
  • An Architecture for Internet Data Transfer
  • This paper presents the design and implementation of DOT, a flexible architecture for data transfer. This architecture separates content negotiation from the data transfer itself. Applications determine what data they need to send and then use a new transfer service to send it. This transfer service acts as a common interface between applications and the lower-level network layers, facilitating innovation both above and below. The transfer service frees developers from re-inventing transfer mechanisms in each new application. New transfer mechanisms, in turn, can be easily deployed without modifying existing applications. We discuss the benefits that arise from separating data transfer into a service and the challenges this service must overcome. The paper then examines the implementation of DOT and its plugin framework for creating new data transfer mechanisms. A set of microbenchmarks shows that the DOT prototype performs well, and that the overhead it imposes is unnoticeable in the wide-area. End-to-end experiments using more complex configurations demonstrate DOT’s ability to implement effective, new data delivery mechanisms underneath existing services. Finally, we evaluate a production mail server modified to use DOT using trace data gathered from a live email server. Converting the mail server required only 184 lines-of-code changes to the server, and the resulting system reduces the bandwidth needed to send email by up to 20%. • Microsoft Excel 2007
  • Excel is Microsoft’s Spreadsheet program. Spreadsheets are often used as a method of displaying and manipulating groups of data in an effective manner. It was originally created for accounting. Excel is useful when you have a very large set of data and need to perform the same operation on each Series / Set of it. It is well-suited to tasks such as sorting, alphabetizing, and performing more complex mathematical functions on data such as adding 2 columns together. Things to Note – Data Types and Formulas Entering Data Data does not have to start at Cell A1. Data can be placed wherever you like as long as your data is in a solid block of adjacent cells. When you print, you can select a specific set of cells so that empty cells are not printed. Data Types There are several different types of data that can be entered into a cell. Some common Data Types are: - Text - Numbers - Dates - Currency Each of these can be formatted to suit the requirements of your data. For instance, you can alter the number of decimal places for a Number, or the way a date is written out or abbreviated with a Date. Most Data is entered by typing Data into a cell or group of cells, then defining a Data Type and Format for the cells. If you have a large block of cells with the same Data Type and Format, you can select them all at once and set the Data Type and Format for all of them. Get
