The first thing to understand is that there are an almost infinite number of variations on the basic Land Rover design. Since 1958 there have been three basic chassis lengths, about half a dozen different engines and dozens of permutations of seating, loadspace and window arrangement to choose from. Each .NET compiler generates portable MSIL byte-code (MicroSoft Intermediate Language). By assuming compliance to the CTS type system, components inter-operate safely.
The .NET framework is actually well suited for object-oriented languages which have an object model close to the one of C# or Java. Unfortunately, languages with other kinds of object models, type systems or supporting different programming paradigms (such as functional programming .. . ) do not fit in .NET as well as C# does. Writing .NET compilers for them requires much more efforts.
However, the .NET framework still gives us a good opportunity to experiment interoperability between two languages as different as Objective Caml[1] (shortened as O’Caml) and C#. O’Caml is an ML dialect: it is a functional/imperative statically typed language, featuring parametric polymorphism, an exception mechanism, an object layer and parameterized modules. By achieving interoperability, each language gains access to a wider set of libraries and programmers take advantage of a richer programming model.
We use the experimental OCamIL compiler[2], which compiles the whole O’Caml distribution (including toplevel) to .NET managed code. We intend to communicate between O’Caml and C# by means of their respective object models. Difficulties arise because neither the type system nor the object model of O’Caml natively fit in the CTS. O’Caml objects cannot be directly compiled to CTS objects. Replacing or extending existing Rich-Client-Applications with web front-ends has traditionally required a significant investment. The Rich Ajax Platform (RAP) provides a fast-path bridge between the application development with RCP and the increasingly important Web 2.0 environment
How do I get my RCP-Application on the Web? This question is asked more and more these days. Besides pure provisioning solutions like Java Web Start there are different approaches that use Eclipse Equinox on the server and recreate the user interface using JSPs or similar technologies. This approach has the disadvantage of a reduced code reuse in the UI, since it is almost impossible to recreate the workbench concept and the familiar extension points with different technologies. This is remedied by RAP, a web-platform that can execute regular RCP applications with few restrictions. This gives developers the opportunity to take an existing RCP application and deliver it as an “ajaxified” web application with a small effort, without coming into contact with Servlets, HTML or JavaScript. With it, RCP concepts like Views, Perspectives or Wizards can be put into web applications.

In order to become familiar with RAP we will start by installing and starting the available demo application. The Technological Challenge
Secure HTTP, or Hypertext Transfer Protocol with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), is the current standard for transmitting secure information over the Internet. The SSL security protocol, developed by Netscape® Communications® Corporation, provides data encryption, server authentication, message integrity, and optional client authentication for a TCP/IP connection. It uses public key cryptography, a technique that uses a pair of asymmetric keys for encryption and decryption. Data is encrypted using a public key, but can only be decrypted using a private key. URLs that use Secure HTTP begin with https://.
Out of the box, Director®-based applications can only offer Secure HTTP connections through Shockwave® within a browser. There is no way to ensure secure communications from a projector. Likewise, there is no efficient way to debug Secure HTTP communications in Director’s authoring environment.
