  • Data Warehouse Performance: Unisys and Microsoft Achieve Record-setting Benchmark
  • Unisys and Microsoft collaborated on a proof of concept to demonstrate that the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 product suite will support even the most demanding enterprise business intelligence initiatives. The proof of concept shows that SQL Server 2005 can deliver the same or better results for a high-performance enterprise-class data warehouse than the more-costly alternatives. We delivered an optimized data warehouse solution using SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2005 Integration Services, and SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services on a Unisys ES7000/one Enterprise Server with x64 processors. We conducted a series of tests for extraction, transformation, and load (ETL) operations and online analytical processing (OLAP) cube building. These tests measured throughput, scalability, and performance as the amount of data and execution parallelism were increased. SQL Server 2005 demonstrated the ability to use all available CPUs and memory for both the bulk data load and cube processing testing. In this proof of concept we outperformed the direct competition (Oracle-based solutions) by at least 45 percent. The test results documented in this paper prove that the SQL Server 2005 suite running on the Unisys ES7000 server can take advantage of parallelism and multiple processors to deliver extremely high rates of ETL and OLAP cube processing throughputs. Our team of 12 specialists from Unisys, Microsoft (U.S. and Germany), and Platon implemented this fully-functional data warehouse in less than three weeks. • Unisys and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Speed Up the Process
  • Unisys and Microsoft have dispelled the perception that for high performance ETL, the only alternative is a UNIX-based solution. With SQL Server 2005 Integration Services, Microsoft and Unisys deliver an optimized ETL solution that will support even the most demanding enterprise Business Intelligence (BI) initiatives. They conducted a series of real ETL (Extraction, Transformation and Load) tests with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Integration Services (SSIS, formerly known as DTS). Performance tests compared throughput, scalability and performance on both 32- and 64-bit processor configurations on a Unisys ES7000. SSIS demonstrated parallelism and the ability to utilize all available CPUs in multiple aggregation, parallel lookup and transformation testing. The testing extracted, transformed and loaded more than 1.2 billion sales and marketing order line items into a data warehouse in less than an hour. It processed one billion lookups over a dimension table with 100 million rows in just over 24 minutes, or about 683,000 lookups/second. Integration Services on a 16-processor Unisys ES7000 processed 16 parallel transformation workloads amounting to 14.84 GB of raw data in 8 minutes, a rate of 1.86 GB/minute. The test results documented in this paper prove that Microsoft SSIS running on an ES7000 server can take advantage of parallelism and multiple processors to deliver the extremely high rates of transformation throughput. Through collaborative benchmark testing and engineering, Unisys and Microsoft mitigate implementation risk by validating optimal performance and establishing best practices in system sizing and configuration to achieve high performance levels. • Installing Ubuntu Linux “Feisty Fawn” Server Version 7.04 Screenshot
  • We want you to install Ubuntu and set up the network manually entering in your fixed IP address, your correct host name and domain. In addition we will manually partition your file system. We will still create the same file system as you would get with an automated install, but in the real world you may need to understand how to create your own file system layout. After the Initial Install We will install the Ubuntu Desktop meta package (Gnome 2.18 and Xorg) as well as properly configure this to work with your particular hardware by installing the xserverxorgvideo intel package. Before we do this we’ll do a number of other exercises as well. You will specify a user name and password of your choosing. One of the exercises will include creating a user named “admin” and a password we’ll specify in class. If you have questions during installation ask your instructor or an assistant. Installing Ubuntu Step 7 If you can press “Cancel” in time please do so, otherwise see the screen in Step 8 and choose to “Go Back” to manually configure your network. Step 14 The hostname is what you should have on your first page of this installation guide. And, remember to use lowercase characters. Step 16 Your machines likely already have partitions on them. If this is the case you need to delete each individual partition first, then you can create partitions. Here is a sample of deleting

  • Mapping the Net: Revenge of the Physical World
  • Once upon a time, the Internet was a wholly virtual environment, moored only loosely to the physical world. It was where information went to become free, where censorship was routed around, where communities could leap barriers of distance and culture in a single bound . . . and where no one knew you were a dog. The kicker was that these aspects were built into the fabric of the Net, thanks to its origins in military communications research. You couldn’t tie the Net to the real world if you wanted to. The physical world is making a comeback, even online. With the collapse of the dot-com stock bubble, things like brick-and-mortar storefronts, tangible assets, face-to-face meetings and hard-dollar profits suddenly are fashionable again. Following the same pattern, the foundational assumption that Internet users and sites have no connection to geography is eroding. It’s now possible to determine with high levels of certainty where someone is connecting from. This allows for targeting of services and content, but also raises the possibility that physical-world laws will encroach on cyberspace. Like it or not, the era when one could confidently speak of the Net as a world apart is coming to a close. Profitability and traditional stock valuation metrics do matter in the end. Napster and MP3.com have been forced to restructure their offerings in response to pressure from the music industry. (Just before we went to press MP3.com was bought by a major record company, Vivendi Universal.) Most, though not all, of the largest

  • Guide to Writing Policy and Procedure Documents
  • Preparing a policy or procedure document for UC Santa Cruz’ InfoSlug on-line policy and procedure system is not as mysterious or difficult as you might think. This guide is designed to explain the campus’ policy and procedure framework, to help policy and procedure owners organize their written documentation, and to act as a resource as they navigate the approval process. You will find the information in this “how to” guide helpful if you are responsible for formulating or documenting new or existing policies and procedures. Over the past several years the campus has been actively examining its decision-making processes with an objective of locating decision-making authority at the lowest appropriate levels. Improvements in the campus’ process for documenting policies, procedures, and delegations of authority will enable this effort by addressing a number of issues: 1. Ease of Access. Currently there are too many manuals and loose memos—an information flood. Users don’t know what is important. Policy and procedure manuals that do exist are not always up-to-date and users cannot always find the documents they need to make informed decisions. An up-to-date, on-line system will permit those who use or are directly affected by policies and procedures to have the access they need. 2. Cost Effectiveness. Currently, individual offices must dedicate resources to maintaining files of relevant campuswide policies and procedures. Alternatively, the offices responsible for policy must respond to requests for policy documents as they are needed by individual users—using scarce human resources within those offices which might better be assigned to other
